Re: 92 eg hatch prob
you have a shorted wire to ground before the bulb
next thing to decide is if its before or after the switch (does the fuse blow instantly with the switch off, or once you turn on the switch
you need a pic of what harness this wiring goes through, i'm pretty sure ronJ has a pic

Re: 92 eg hatch prob
I had a problem like this too. Brake lights were dead, and interior lights too. I found a wire on the wiring connector for the brake light on passenger side was corroded. So, I cut the wire and re-grounded it in the light fixture itself (where bulb attaches to the connector). I took the light out of plug, folded it inside the plug, and reconnected the bulb to hold the wire in place.
I know not sophisticated, or overly detailed, but it works.

Start by visually inspecting the wires that go into the brake light connectors. You might see greenish looking corrosion on a wire grounding the connector.

Re: 92 eg hatch prob
Well your friend must not kno a lot about wiring if he replaced a fuse that keapt blowing with a peace of wire. He could have caught your car on fire. I bet by doing that he just made your problem worse by melting the insulation off of more wires that's wat you smelled burning lol. But it sounds like a short in the wiring after the switch since the fuse blows when you turn it on. Start by tracing the wire down look for brakes in the wire rips in the wire or exposed wire good luck

Friend: "Okay, so we're going to replace a safety item, that is designed to burn apart when given too much voltage, with a solid piece of wire, so you can turn your lights on no problem. It won't burn up due to the obvious short in your system, so it'll just keep power flowing through it. Don't worry, I know a lot about wiring, my T - shirt says so."
You: "Your shirt says your second job is gynocology."
Friend: "Oh, right. Well, don't worry. My first job is wiring."
Your friend needs smacked and you now need to open your dash to find the short.

Re: Fuse Keeps blowing
how were your fog lights wired up? that could be the problem. most people wire them into their corner lights which are connected to the interior and brake lights and that is what is causing your fuse to blow everytime you turn your lights on.
