Expected MPG increase with the AEM CAI on my 99EX?
I searched but couldn't find anything. I sort of thought that this would be a common question.
How many mpg can I expect to gain with my CAI? I've noticed a little more power and more responsiveness...and my engine is a lot louder in the lower gears (heh..and 5th too if i hit 25mph )
How about with a straightpipe and CAI? Just wondering...
By the way, if you're getting an aem cai, you can figure out your own way to install some of the things. I took my front body thing off again and took off the splash guard instead of frelling jacking it up and taking off the wheel. Much easier imo.

Re: Expected MPG increase with the AEM CAI on my 99EX? (Mildly Interesting)
Haha. Increase with CAI? You will want to hear the thing all the time once you hear it the first time. I am forseeing a loss of gas mileage.

I gained MPG , well at first the pcm ( after resetting ) was a bit confused and got 2-3 less than norm but after about six or seven starts it learned the new f/a mix and now I get about +2 better than norm. I would see the larger pathway feeding more air which in turn would require more fuel but I think that the conical filter vs. the stock slab increases your MPG - my .02 & experience.

Re: (parasonic)
Aftermarket intakes, headers, and exhausts are more free flowing than their stock counterparts, thus making the aftermarket parts more efficient. Theoretically, a more efficient engine will generate better fuel economy if you don't change your driving habits. But, if adding these bolt-on parts would cause you to drive like a maniac, you'll cross cancel the MPG gains.

yeah i found that with the boltons if you drive conservative you may see mpg go up. but as soon as you floor it it will drop more than if you had no bolt ons....

i gained about 2 more mpg with my apex ws and aem cai. that is still driving normal, and i drive it hard from time to time. i'm sure i'd get more if i shifted at or before 3k.

yes... a cold air intake will INCREASE your MPG... better gas mileage... for 2 reasons i can think of.
First of all it makes the engine breathe easier, which in effect lets it accelerate quicker and with less "effort". this less required effort means you dont have to get on the car as much to get it going. this will increase the gas mileage just because there is a basic HP increase throughout the power band because the engine is not working as hard to suck in the air, and you dont need to rev as much.
the 2nd effect is due to increased volumetric efficiency. hondas uses a speed density fuel injection system that has NO CLUE if you are flowing more air then you used to. This effect causes the car to run leaner. This will increase power with a hotter and more efficient burn, and once again will increase MPG. But this only applies under full throttle because otherwise the car is in closed loop for cruising and idle. This effect just doesnt apply when the ECU is paying attention to the o2 sensor.
As for how much more mileage to expect? I really wouldnt expect any since a cold air intake hardly does **** for performance anyway.

eh, can't hurt. Just unplug the battery for a couple of seconds.

so you guys are saying, once you get a CAI, you will love the sound and always drive faster.. therefore losing MPG.
what about normal driving? c'mon now. i've seen half "yes" and half "no"

Re: (HamsterBall)
I know, man...heh. Mixed results.
I have been driving like..a lot harder now. Though..I've been keeping lower rpm's in higher gears in downtown driving.
Now, I will clean off my dirty battery posts!

Re: (parasonic)
Okay..I found a Greddy SP used for one year and in very good condition for $325 shipped. How does that sound for cost, and what MPG difference will this make (and power, too) with the CAI?
Thanks!
Thanks!
