Re: exhaust wrap (pr0jectezek1el)
i'll assume you're talking about wrapping your exhaust manifold...
I mean, excessive heat robs power - so its pretty self explanatory. However, read a warranty card on most headers, they say that using this wrap voids the warranty...so be careful.

if the header is not evenly wrapped, this is what causes it to crack. this is because the wrapped section cools at a different rate then the section thats not wrapped.

Agreed. Wrap it right and evenly with no gaps and you'll be fine.

you could try jet hot. It might be a bit more expensive but they seem to do a pretty good job. try http://www.jet-hot.com

Exhaust wrap decreases life of a header...period. It will give more performance though...best of two evils I guess.
6 years on a wrapped header? That's surprising.

The REAL reason I wrapped the header to start with..........don't laugh TOO HARD!!!....I wanted to make sure the relocated O2 sensor saw enough exhaust heat to work properly. I want to pass emissions without trouble.
I didn't know at the time I had a "heated" O2 sensor!!!!
I knew about keeping the underhood temps down, and keeping gas velocity up.
My header is rusty from the scrapage. But where the wrap was, the coating is a little dull. About 1/2 of the wrap has fallen of lately, just falling apart, SIX YEARS LATER!!!!!!!!!
I only expected the header to last 3-4 year anyways!

this is really interesting information
if putting that on is better for performance id probably do it
id like to hear others opinios

was it pretty hard to put on exhaust wrap? also when my friend installed his exhaust wrap it started to smoke and smell like its was buring and the color of the exhaust wrap turn into a brownish color.

Re: exhaust wrap (pr0jectezek1el)
I'm going on 3 years with a fully wrapped ceramic coated DC header and I have experienced no problems. As far as keeping temps down in the engine bay, YES, it does a great job at that. In fact, you can touch the header with the car running and not burn your hand. And the point of the wrap (as stated above) is to keep the exiting exhaust gas from cooling down too fast. I personally did it for the heat protection in the engine bay, I would however, like to see a back to back dyno run to compare HP gains.
Also stated above, uneven wrapping, and big gaps contribute to the cracking. Of course even if it's done right, it's still an increased risk. It was fairly easy for me to wrap mine, I suggest wearing gloves though, that fiberglass is nasty stuff.

Oh, and after you wrap it, put a few coats of high temp paint on it. This kinda "seals" the wrap and protects it from oil and moisture and stuff. The smoke is normal and will stop.

One more, read a thread I started a while ago, it got heated but turned out ok, there is some good info on it if you read the whole thing.

Re: exhaust wrap (gen 5 hatch)
mugen header
id rather not wrap mine bc of lifespan issues. id like to keep mine considered how much they cost.

I did mine all the way to the 02 sensor, but I'm sure if you just wanted to wrap the top half that would be fine as well. I wanted to keep the temps even throughout the header.
And if you have a real expensive header like a mugen, I'd probably not wrap it.
