Ex Tranny= Si tranny =Del sol tranny??
Looking to buy a transmission for my d16y7, tall geared hatch and have heard the EX tranny is the hot ticket for shortening the gearing. I've learned the transmissions from the 92-95 D series ex and si models are basically the same and will work in my 97 hatch.
I've found a trans locally and the guy says it's out of a 96 del sol w/ 50-60k miles. Were the transmissions in the del sols the same as the ex and si?
If so, what would be a fair price for it?

92-95 EX tranny is almost the same as the 92-95 Si tranny except the 5th gear is slightly longer. A 93-95 Del Sol Si tranny is the same as the 92-95 Civic Si tranny. I'm not sure about the 96-97 Del Sol Si trannies tho because they have D16Y8s in them.. so they might have the 96-00 EX trannies.

Yes, all D16Z6-equipped cars came with the same transmission. You can also get a transmission from D16Y8-equipped cars, which are the 1996-2000 Honda Civic EX.
A fair price would be whatever you're willing to pay for it. I've seen them as low as $75 locally in Texas up to $350 here on Honda-Tech Classifieds. Depends on condition, year, and mileage.

Thank you. That is a very informative link. Hmmm... it would seem one could make a cheap low ratio gearbox by just changing the final drive from the dx to the ex specs. Second and third gears are a bit different, but everything else looks the same.
Anyone ever try just changing out the final drive gearing on these before? easy/hard?? Results any good?

I've never attempted to change anything inside the transaxle, but it can be done with good results. I'm not sure if going from dx to ex final drive would really be worth it though cuz you can find an ex tranny for failry cheap. I not really an authority figure in this area though...

Just grab up the EX tranny. The gears are closer, regardless of final drive.
