Is this EX too expensive?
I've been searching around for another cheap EG civic, but they all seem very overpriced. I see people trying to get around 4,500 for a coupe with over 150,000 miles on it. I don't understand this, i got my 92 sedan for $250. And got a rebuilt distributor and it's ran fine for over 2 years.
What do you think decent price range is for an EG coupe/hatchback with around 150K miles on it?
Anyways I found a 94 civic EX, in good condition overall, except it needs a new tranny for $1,300. I was thinking it would be a decent project to turbo the d series, and swap in a b series tranny(not sure the compatibility). Or Do a complete b series swap though that may be a bit expensive for me.
Anyways what do you think of that deal?

that 94 civic is worth like 500 bucks. the MOST you should pay for a CLEAN eg is 3000. if they refuse then just wait. if you are willing to wait you WILL find a good deal, it may take one month, two months, or even three though.. if you're not.. then you might have to pay more then it;s worth. and it never hurts to give an offer, 4500 is just a asking price..

1)$1000-$2300
2)I think that's a decent deal. Can you do the tranny swap yourself? An EX tranny should be around $300 at local junkyards. You can get it for much cheaper however if you take your time.
B and D series are not interchangeable.

i dont think its that bad... 1300 for the civic. B and d arent interchangable so you will have to do what litterbox said and get the tranny from the junkyard, or just do the complete b series swap, which is like 2500 or something for the b16, or 3200 for the gsr setup, there are other parts you have to buy though like timing belt, water pump and other small things...

Re: (numbnuts22715)
hmm. My friend could probably do the tranny swap, not sure exactly what it takes but he definately can do alot to cars. would it have to be lifted though, highest he could get it would be jackstands. Probably won't be taking this though, I don't have alot of hands on mechanical experience, and could use to save my money for just a commuter, I'm always on the lookout though...

well if he has a motor hoist itd probably be easier i think, he'd have to take out the engine too, put the new tranny in, and then put it all back together. If he can do a lot to cars, this should be something he can do.

Re: (numbnuts22715)
Yeah he's got a few motor hoists, him and his dad are big mustang guys and have about 4 351 clevelands and some 302s sitting around waiting for some project or another. The only real problem i may have with this is finding a tranny. Because i'm not sure what to look for to see if the tranny i'm swapping in isn't as screwed as the car's current one.
Also it would take him awhile to finish it probably, he's working and taking classes at the JC, as well as trying to get his stang street legal. How long do you think the whole tranny swap would take me and him? Or if all else fails how much a decent shop would charge to swap it if i supplied everything?

Re: (s92dx)
hmm, more newbie questions haha. Ok lets say I either talk the guy down and buy this one, or find a cheaper one with no engine i'd have just around enough money for the car and this swap: http://hmotorsonline.com/shop/...30005
I think that would be the right one, with the hydraulic tranny, however there's a ton of b16a's from 92-95 SiR on that site.
However this is something i'd want done right for sure, and would want a shop that's familiar with these swaps to do it. So I'm wondering the average cost for this swap done by a shop is. I'm in Nor Cal if that helps any... And it says can get an LSD for 300 more dollars, is that something I'd want, if keeping the engine stock, with boltons.

Re: (s92dx)
anyone know how the stock b16 clutch is? If it will take some abuse on basically stock power?

I haven't read any of the above threads, but I'll offer my opinion. Price is ultimately determined by your location and supply/demand in that area.
If you are located near me, in NJ/NY etc. I would say that $1400 wouldn't surprise me as an asking price for a 94ex (w/bum trans), as long as its in excellent condition otherwise. I would expect that you might be able to get it down to around $1000, but around here you really should expect to pay AT LEAST $1000 for a coupe or hatchback. Hatchbacks are in greater demand and there really are relatively few on the market, so they go for much more than coupes.
I was lucky and bought my 92 Cx hatch for $750, but that's certainly not a common price.
See what you can do to get it around $1k or a bit under and then spend the difference on a DOHC swap, such as an LS (which can be had for only around $800+time/cost to put it in and other small items).
Good luck.

Re: (jlsmi2)
Well, I'm in Northern California, bay area. So is the whole LS swap $800, or just the engine? If I do a swap i probably won't be turboing for awhile, so the b16 seems a little peppier for me, but if the whole LS swap is that cheap i might be able to look for a beginning turbo kit, except d series turbo kits are so cheap... too many choices.

Re: (numbnuts22715)
yeah didn't think so, and with the b16 swap being like 2300, i'd rather go there since I don't have any turbo plans off the bat, and turbo is still doable on the b16.
Probably no swap's gonna happen since i just barely would have enough money for all the parts, not for the install though...

If you're interested I know a honda-tech member who has a LS swap (w/o axles) for $800 (engine, trans, ecu). Its off a 1995 with 90k miles. I don't know if he still has it, but he did as of a few weeks ago (I bought the F+R discs off him). I can't remember his H-T PM name, but his AIM is "jdmfresh". Ask him, he might still have it.
Also, I have seen other LS swaps for around for around $800. Frankly, the LS should pull very similar numbers to the b16a1,2 and has more potential because of its displacement/torque. You can always get the b16a or b18c vtec head to add another 20-30 to the wheels.
Just my opinion...
Frankly, LS in a Civic will probably be just as quick as

Re: (jlsmi2)
Cool, thanks. But really not sure. Do you know smog laws on the 1.8l in a civic in CA? I've heard any of the 1.5-1.6 L engines are fine but don't know about the others. And I don't want to put the money into a honda that's not street legal haha. Dang if only my civic had a manual tranny I'd go for a swap easy right now, but after buying another one, my budget will be tight.

Re: (s92dx)
Well since you have an automatic transmission, if you want to do a B18b or LS swap you shouldn't really have a problem finding one. There are so many automatic LS's out there and they sell for cheap. I found one is a local junkyard with 30,000 miles on it for 900 dollars. Check junkyards you can find pretty good stuff in there just always ask about their warranties.
