Default Engine Swap Question

I have a 98 Civic DX with the y7 in it. It is automatic and I plan on keeping it that way (so flame me already and get it over with!)
What I want to know is what would be a good engine to swap in and still keep it automatic and smog legal?
I was thinking of a B18b LS motor or just swap in a built d16y8. I know they made a B16a1 in an automatic but I think it is older generation and would not pass emissions.
I do not want to do a manual swap because I like the convenience of my automatic.
Should I just keep my y7 and build it up or should I swap over to a new engine and start with something better. Also, if i went with a b18b and kept it automatic, would I eventually be able to do an LS/Vtec conversion to it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
