Default Question About Swaps?

i have a 98 civic dx coupe with the d16y7 (1.6l non-vtec) i have a problem, my engine is knocking more than a jehovnah witness. i belive it is a rod or something else. but if my engine goes to **** i would like to swap engines.
i have an automatic tranny, and i called ard performance and the told me i can swap in a b16a1 but it would not be legal because it is not of the same year engine or newer. i asked about a b18b integra ls motor and the said it would bolt right in but not be legal because it came from an integra not a civic. the other option is to swap in a d16y8 (civic ex motor) and build that up.
i need help, what should i do? my other choice is to find out what is wrong with my current engine and if it is the rods replace them with stronger, forged rods, but is it worth it?
also, what would be the better swap? i do not want to swap the tranny, i do want to keep it automatic. is there anything i can do.
right now i am favoring the b18 integ motor, but i live in alaska and there are not that many people up here that can do the swap?
can anyone help me out, i am kinda new to this thing and do not want to get screwed.

i dunno if i call it illegal to swap from another year. but if ur in cali just get a swap and go to a refree...they'll check for smog and if VIN # and if all clears...they give u an exempt certificate for ur swap.....

not everything is legal, and the only way it will couse a problem is if your car gets stolen or some other reason why your isurance co. my find out, but it isnt usually problem as long as you have the paper work from the new engine...with that being said...before you do any type of swap you need to ask yourself what you are trying to accomplish...cuz if your trying to get more power out of your civic dx then keeping that auto is not the way to go....it is possible to switch from auto to 5speed...and it isnt very hard either...but if your set on keepng it auto then an ls non-vtec should run you around $1000 and then the install should be somewhere around $500 (cuz it is minimal work)....your best bet would be to research a lil more and possibly do the swap yourself if you tight on money...
