engine Identity/ B20 for $150!!
I was in the pick n pull today and I found a late 80s early 90s prelude (the style before the last one) with an engine that had what appeared to be an LS head with a block stamped B20A5. I thought Holy **** is this a B20 motor with an LS head? SO my question is: IS IT?!? I can get the whole thing for like $150 is this a B20 or did the lude come with a similar engine? Thanks

yeah they did come with a 'b20'...but it's not like the one he's hoping it is.
Seriously...the b20a5 isn't worth the time of day.

one time it asked me for the time of day and i gave it...what a waste of time! i had to look at my wrist and everything.
B20a = bad
B20z = good

Re: engine Identity/ B20 for $150!! (EKology)
Ok, basically this is how it is.
The B20A and B21 came in the 3rd gen preludes. The bore is still 81mm, but the stroke is hideously long. This made these some of the worst Honda engines out there. The side loading of the long stroke makes them unreliable for boosting or reving high.
You don't want anything to do with that thing.

the b20 z block + b20 a crank makes the motor displace like 2135cc so id be a 2.1 litre, basically a stroked b20z, but i dont know if anyones done this.

ok so here is the real question is it a real B-series block? Will a B16 head bolt to it like it would to a CRV block?

i second that. the b21 was the worst honda motor ever built. you coulndt pay me to put that in my car.

Mabey it will but DONT DO IT. The rod to stroke ratio will be so horrible that I wouldn't be surprised if it blew the moment you took it above 7500rpm or so.

Re: engine Identity/ B20 for $150!! (LS-hatch)
Yes a B16 head will bolt to it but it takes a little more modification than a LS swap does. Check out http://www.ludespeed.com I think they still sell the conversion parts.

longer stroke motors have less side loading than shorter stroke ones, you have it backwards, so whats the problem?

Re: engine Identity/ B20 for $150!! (sparq)
I've heard somewhere that the Prelude B20 crank is worth money now. Bor sure if it's because of the previously mentioned application in the B20A/B, but regardless, they are in demand.

call me stupid or what ever but growing up i had a b20a5 and reved it to the limiter on a daily basis and drove it to 260k before selling. not to stay that it's the right thing to do but it's been done without going boom

No you are backwards, longer stroke engines side load the pistons more than shorter stroke engines. Think about how changine the stroke in an engine configuration would affect the angles of the con rod at specific degrees of rotation
And eventhough it is mostly my opinion...a B20B/Z block and a B20A crank is NOT a good thing

Re: engine Identity/ B20 for $150!! (SLPR)
well dont some places sell a b18b/b20 storker kit? Using the same 84mm bore of the b20, with a stroker crank making a 2.2 liter, or 2.3 even.
What would be ther difference? The quality of the aftermarket crank?
I was thinking b20z block, 84mm aftermarket pistons, and rods, arp studs all around, completely balanced, with the b20a/b21 crank.....having a cheaper stroked b20, that you could theoretically rev to 8 grand.
I would like to drive a 2.2/2.3 liter crvtec powered hatch....any comments on this?
I mean if you were going to buy the rods/pistons/and have it balanced, then why not balance the rotating assembly with a b20a crank???
Elaborations please....

These kits probably use long rods and pistons with raised wrist pin locations to balance the ill effects of the increase in crank stroke. I would still not use one of these kits for anything but a track=only engine.
The money you would spend on getting such a combination working well would be better spent on a H engine swap...which would still make a better street use engine anyways.
