Engine for 97 HX?
Hey im new to this honda world and my wife just ran my other honda out of oil so its in need of a replacement motor now. It has the D16Y5 with vtec-e and i have no idea what i can replace this with that will basically drop in. Any advice for you all here would be greatly appreciated. Im looking for something basic like whats stock as its just a daily driver for her.
Thanks in advance

Re: Engine for 97 HX?
Any d series engine will drop right in and hook up for the most part. B series is the same, albeit swapping out the transmission/mounts/linkages.

okay that works. Yeah i dont want to mess with swapping other things out if i dont need to so ill probably stay away from a b series then. if i were to go to the y8 that has vtec instead of the vtec e do i need to swap out ecu's or will the ecu that i have still work?

You'll want to swap ecu's, just to keep everything working and have the correct computer for the correct engine. They don't run for too much.

if ur looking just to get the car running, and your not looking for a high hp build motor, id say throw another D in! If your looking for something for a high hp build later down the road id say get a B

Yeah its just a daily driver so i dont want to put to much into it as i have few other cars and a bike that are my money pits that i call toys Basically something to keep it reliable as a honda as my other honda just turned 300K!

alright found someone local that has a 96-98 ex motor and also a 99-00 ex motor. He said i could use my stock ecu since both engines are still vtec and that both will drop in and still plug-n-play as far as harness and sensors. Is this true or is he just trying to make a sale?

Re: Engine for 97 HX?
If you want it to run right match the ECU to the engine, Vtec-e is not vtec, it doesn't work like vtec, isn't for the same purpose as vtec, in short, its not vtec. If its a 5 speed HX you can drop in another D-series engine with corresponding ECU and some minor electrical modifications. If its an automatic HX you pretty much have to get another D16Y5 if you want it to run right.

Re: Engine for 97 HX?
are you sure you want to swap engines? I heard the d16y5 with vtec-e is a pretty good motor meaning it has the highest mpg ratings compared to the other D series.. wheres NOFX, she would give you all the info about it. Since you stated that you will be doing alot of daily driving then I dont think you should swap motors. Generally in this case

its a 5 speed so looks like im in luck there. what minor electrical mods will i have to do? Ill look into getting a matched ecu for the engine he has then in that case as id like it to be matched for the pair.

You will need to convert from a 5 wire O2 sensor to a 4 wire O2 sensor.
Make sure the ECU came from a 5 speed EX, you don't want one from an automatic, same goes with the intake manfold on the donor engine.

is that mod for the o2 sensor hard or kinda straight forward with a diy write-up? Whats the easiest way to tell the difference with the intake manifolds so when i go look at these motors ill know?

Re: Engine for 97 HX?
not the route id like to go with the car as its still gonna be a daily driver for my wife so the extra money and extra hp doesnt need to be there. If i was doing it for myself and looking to get more out of it i would no doubt be looking into that series for a upgrade. And with any vehicle all the extra stuff doesnt make the value of the car increase unless its worth it to the person whos looking to buy it.

Re: Engine for 97 HX?
i cant get it rebuilt as when my wife ran it out of oil it put a small hole in the front of the block so the block and head are trashed im sure so i have no choice but find another complete motor : (
