EG Hatchback OEM Rear Speaker Option Install
I searched the net and couldn't find any instructions or DIYs for installing the OEM rear speaker option on a 92-95 Honda Civic Hatchback. All hatches come prewired for rear speakers!
It was easy and doesn't really need a DIY, but I created one anyway.
Tools:
Philips screw driver
Utility knife
Electrical tape or zip ties (optional)
Optional rear speaker setup: (*Discontinued)
Left and right interior trim panels (*83787-SR3-K00ZB, *83737-SR3-K00ZB)
Left and right speaker brackets (*39125-SR3-K00, *39124-SR3-K00)
Left and right speaker seal (*83788-SR3-K01, *83738-SR3-K01)
10- screws (93903-24480)
10 - nuts (90302-SA4-003)
16 - screws (93891-04012-08)
2 - nuts (94505-05070)
2 - 5.25 speakers
2 - Metra 71-031C Speaker wiring harness (optional, but clean!)
Speaker covers, brackets and seals.
5 screws and 5 nuts. (x2)
8 screws (x2)
Speaker bracket and nut.
Cheap coaxial rear speaker (5.25") Front speaker (6.5")
Remove the rear speaker trim blank. Pry it off with your fingers or a small interior trim pry tool.
The vertical plastic piece needs to be removed or trimmed to allow the speaker bracket to be mounted.
There are two options:
Option 1 - Remove the entire vertical plastic piece. (Photo credit:suspendedHatch on civic-eg.com)
Option 2 - Trim about 3/8" of the plastic off.
Grab the speaker bracket and nut.
Feed the welded bracket screw from the back through the hole in the body sheet metal.
Attach the nut on the screw.
Remove the two screws in the frame bracket. The upper one is tricky with the vertical plastic piece in front of it, but the plastic is flexible. Insert the bracket behind the plastic and in front of the metal frame bracket. Reinstall the two screws. The bracket is now fully installed.
Grab the 5 screws and nut clips. Put one clip over each hole. These clips allow the screw something to "bite" into so they can be tighten down well.
Place the seal over the speaker bracket, line up the holes and install the screws.
The speaker harnesses are prewired. Reach down and feel for the wires.
Left side:
Right side:
Secure the speaker to the bracket with four screws.
Connect the speaker harnesses together. Or cut and solider the wires.
I secured the wires to the frame bracket with electrical tape and a zip tie (not pictured).
Install the four remaining screws to secure the seal to the bracket.
Install speaker cover trim.
Done. Enjoy the sound!

good stuff. would love to do the same mod with mine but good grief do people think those speaker panels are made of gold. sucks when you spend 2x as much as the speakers cost just for a panel that has the mesh grill in it and some brackets to hold it together..
i'm thinking about doing something with fiberglass there one of these days. sealed speakers sound much better anyways. but the oem does look nice..

From a member here on Honda-Tech, deschlong. Here's the link to his marketplace thread LINK
Yeah, they're pricey. Though I'd imagine if Honda still sold them those panels would run $30-40 each. Then with the brackets, seals and hardware the price would be close to what they go for used. That's really the only difference.
I've tried buying the set up from people selling their cars on Craigslist and was refused. When deschlong decided to sell his stash, I didn't hesitate!

Re: EG Hatchback OEM Rear Speaker Option Install
The other place to look is ebay.
I've have done both. I think I may have gotten the last black set from deschlong but don't quote me on that and also purchased one black set from ebay before I was aware of honda-tech and deschlong.
Both times it was about $120 USD for the sets.
Not cheap, but well worth it and if the cars are ever wrecked, it's the first thing I'm pulling out of the car before it's written off.
