Does head gasket sealer wreck water pump seals?
I had a D16y8 with a water pump that only had 30k miles on it. The head gasket let go and I didn't want to do the replacement job so I poured in a bottle of blue devil head gasket sealer.
Within a few minutes of idling it started puking coolant out of the weep hole of the water pump. I ended up doing the head gasket job and replacing the water pump because everything was so messed up at that point and it's been holding strong since then
I also had another civic with a bad head gasket that had a leaking water pump from the weep hole, water pump looked to be in pretty good shape, no corrosion on the impeller and it looked pretty new. I thought that was odd so I went ahead and did a timing belt and water pump job on it and poured the used coolant back into it.
Lo and behold my brand new water pump starts puking coolant from both weep holes after a few minutes of idling.
What the hell? I can only guess that they used blue devil head gasket sealer because the overflow bottle was full of a blue liquid and like a dumbass I just poured it into my bucket and then poured the bucket back into the rad. Is it destroying the water pump seal? Or is it just thinning the coolant out to the point where it can leak past the seal???

those liquid sealer stuff should be outlawed. All they do is gunk up and clogged parts such as water pumps.

And what exactly am I looking for? I can't see the impeller seal because it's behind the impeller of course. And even then, It's it's probably too small of a leak to see any damage to the seal with the naked eye anyways.

Well yeah, I'm not going to use head gasket sealer again in a honda. I've actually used it in a nissan before and it worked decently well. This most recent time was just me being a dumbass I guess. I thought the blue liquid could have possibly been honda blue coolant or something.

What you'll find is something that didn't belong on the water pump when you 1st installed one, almost every Honda water pump that year looks similar so there is no reason to say you don't know how a water pump from a honda civic suppose to look like.

Yeah, I know it's not the best thing to do to JB weld the weep hole closed. But if the solution is replacing the pump, may as well do it later. The pump is quiet, nothing seems to be going wrong just yet. Why replace it now when I can do it later?
