Default distributor problems

Every once in a while, my car just won't start. It'll start to turn over, but just never quite make it. The car will shake and make it to like 400 rpms for like a second them just drop. I checked the battery, its not that, so i'm assumign its my distributor...

how would you go about figuring out withs wrong with the distributor, or fixing it? I'm avoiding getting a new one, but if it needs to be done, then so be it.

naw, i'm kinda new at this whole thing. i know what everything is and where it is, but i'm not sure what one looks like fully fuctional and not working...

what would a bad air filter or fuel filter do, sound, or look like, if it was not working properly?

When distributor components fail, like a coil, it will be fine 1 second, then dead the next. No warning, no stumbling or struggling, nothing.

Check the plugs. If they're wet, you know fuel is not the problem. Use a screwdriver as a ground and see if you get a spark. If you can isolate whether it's fuel or ignition, that will help.
