Default Distributor grinding

Hey,
Driving home my distributor started to make a grinding/screeching noise (metal on metal) and I could feel the distributor vibrating when I put my hand on it.
Check engine light came on as I pulled into my garage and the engine started having trouble holding rpm's.
Is this symptomatic of the rotor? or of the distributor itself?
About to go pull it apart and see whats up - but any info would help...

Did you take off the cap? Happen to notice some red dust? What code was thrown?

If your dizzy took a dive you'll have to replace the entire sub-assembly which usualy runs about $250 from an online store. The sub-assembly is the cage that contains all the sensors, so you'll have to swap over the coil, igniter, cap, rotor and dustshield.

yep pulled the cap and it's filled with the red dust. Check engine light came one, but didnt bother to check the code once I had seen the dust...
-after searching around - looks like this indicates that it's time for a new dizzy.
Found a D15 one for cheap, which I know won't bolt right up. but can I swap the internals over?

Sounds like the bushings inside of it have gone bad. See if there is any slop or play in the shaft.
I had that happen once and it made my camgear slip. So I would recomend replacing that sucker soon.

Yep, haven't driven the car since. Don't wanna risk messing up the timing.
the D15 dizzy is on it's way to my place, so gonna try and swap over the internals and see if that works.
Can anyone tell me in advance if it will work or not? Save me some time pulling apart 2 distributors!

Cool - just finished swapping over the internals from the D15 to the D16 housing.
Everything works perfect. The only difference is the actual metal housing on the D15 dizzy (presumably the D16 is different to accomodate the VTEC solenoid....?)
Thanks for everyones help!
