Default Distributer Went, Need A Little Info.

So this morning, my distributor in my (1995) EJ1 decided to not work any more. I had it towed to pepboys this morning, and they called me a few hours later confirming it was the distributer. They said, with the tow, it would be $530..yea, screw that.

When I replace it, there really is nothing I can mess up, correct? It`s just make a mark on the top bolt to align with the dizzy, unbolt, put new one on with rotor facing same direction as old one, put cap back on, and good right? I`ll end up going to my machanic up the street to verify timing once I get it installed.

How do you know its the distributor? I ask because I'm having issues with my own civic and cannot figure out if the distributor is my cause of having a non-starting car.

Do NOT use a Pep boys replacement. You really should use OEM Honda parts.

Do you know what exactly failed?

if you are replaceing it all togther I highly reccomend checking/re-setting the ignition timing.

I won`t touch pepboys brand parts...

I don`t have access to my local Honda dealer cause they are closed...figure right? I was thinking I was going to go with the brand from Advance Auto Parts.

And I`m really strapped for cash and time, so the cheapest is what I have to go with for now. And when I get paid next week, I may order an OEM one...

Just making sure. Aftermarket ignition parts usaly don't last long in these cars.

I honestly would find a used OEM distibuter before I went aftermarket.

Even then I think you should figure what failed in this one and look into replacing it.

I would recommend you put engine to TDC, then pull distributor out. Then Place it exactly back in. Note the direction the button/rotor is pointed

It's prolly the igniter inside the distributor...if it even is the dist.
Anyway, its a simple test if u have or can borrow a multimeter. Get the harbor freight one if u have to. HT frowns on posting links to copyrighted material or I'd show u the diagram. Small unit with the wires going to it inside the dizzy.
Check your pm's

There is only two ways to put the distributor in right and 180 degrees out. Pull the cap, see which way the rotor is facing. Pull two wire blocks. Pull two 12mm bolts. Slap in the new distributor. Almost forgot unscrew the screw holding the rotor and put said rotor in the new distributor.

Seriously a fifteen minute job.

I took out the distributor and looked at it. The coil pack had a hole in it, and the distributor itself had a crack on the front side. I replaced it today and took maybe 10 minutes, and the car runs fine. I just need to adjust the timing slightly.

Pepboys wanted $530. I got it $200 with a $55 core charge. So all in all, it cost me about $200 between the tow and parts. So about $300 haha.

If you turn the key to on and you hear the hum for a about two seconds or so, your fuel pump is fine. From my experience, it sounds like the dizzy itself.

This is incorrect as the gear is slightly asymetrical and will only fit one way. Look at it closely and you'll see, the two posts are slightly offset as are the two slots in the cam.

After I did it, I`m still trying to figure out how some people can something so simple like that wrong. I mean, if you, (in general), have issues remembering which way the rotor was when you took off the old dizzy, than take a pic of how it looked.
