Difference between D16Y7 and D16Y8
A friend of mine has a 94 civic h/b with a D16Y7 non Vtec engine. He bought brand new OEM water and oil pump, then he found out his block is broken. He found a buy who is selling him a D16Y8 block, he wants to know the diference between these two and if the water and oil pumps work on these one.

Re: Difference between D16Y7 and D16Y8 (Yolandita)
The Y8 is the block designed for VTEC. There is a hole on the back side of the top of the block in between the #2 and 3 cylinders that allows oil to flow into the head, and further on to the VTEC solenoid. The Y7 has this hole plugged up. But some of the later model Y7's, although did still come non-VTEC, do not have this plug, and is practically identical to the Y8 block other than the stamping.
Oil and water pumps should be the same thing.

My freind has the nnon-vtec head, what modifications he has todo? tap the oil feed? The old Y7 motor had ARP studs, will the studs be the same for Y8?

also knock sensor for the y8 block, but not in y7 block for the work/money he'd spend anyway i'd look for a complete y8 engine

What do you mean about knock sensor? is it the same or difrent?
Im asking because he dosnt want a race engine he wants it as a daily driver and go to college. He added studs cus he like new studs and bought those. He had a complete rebuit engine and the machine shop bore his block so bad it has an egg shape so he need a new block, the only one he found was this guy asking $300 for the whole block D16Y8.

I don't think the water pumps are the same either. The d16z6 and its non vtec equivalent (spelling) have different pumps... I learned this the hard way when I was just throwing a engine together.
I would just get the whole engine for $300, thats not a bad price if its in good condition.

put the damn thing in just use all your y7 parts that are needed and your done!
dont worry bout a knock sensor doesnt matter on a obd1 car!
You guys are over complicating a simple block install! vtec orifice is only on the older blocks i do not believe the y7 has that!
