d16z6 vitara build timing belt on TDC?
hi im new on here and was referred to this website for help.
d16z6 vitara pistons 75.5mm with eagle rods
acl bearings, arp head studs, all oem gaskets
59300 zex camshaft with supertech valve springs and ti retainers
stock intake manifold and exhaust manifold
aem short ram
stock p28 ecu (have a po6 too)
Im having some problems setting the timing on the engine.
Everything installed i go start it and let it warmed up til fan kicked on installed the service connector pin and check timing and im way advanced like an inch from the red mark. if i retard my distributor all the way im half an inch from the mark on the crank pulley.
heres how i did timing:
set the the cam gear and timing gear TDC
installed tensioner/spring.
route belt to pulley, tensioner, water pump, cam gear and back to the pulley.
bolt tensioner half way and installed crank pulley bolt.
turn it counterclockwise three cam teeth car from TDC then tight and torque tensioner bolt.
turn it counterclockwise 360 degrees til the cam gear and timing gear is back to TDC
it all matched up even the crank pulley to the cover
i need some help on what im doing wrong
idk if pictures can help but i can take some if needed.
takes about 30min to get to the timing belt.
any help is appreciated and Thank You!

i believe its a safety to break in the first 500 miles for engine and the clutch
before changing the oil and filter and installing the turbo kit in.

I don't know where you heard that tripe about turning down fuel pressure.
You can run the stock ECU if the injectors are stock BUT you have a turbo cam and aftermarket retainers/springs in the head. How do you think THOSE will affect how your engine runs? You probably need an aftermarket cam gear.
And you should b breaking that engine in on the DYNO. Your belief has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

Re: d16z6 vitara build timing belt on TDC?
at first my timing was way off so i found that the timing on the timing gear was wrong so i redid all the timing but now its where its at 1in off on the advanced side
i did it again the second time maybe the tensioner was not adjusted correctly so i did that but no change.
im gonna go take some pictures if that helps.
also my crank pulley somehow has five timing marks
three on the left and two on the right
i thought it had only one at TDC
my d15b7 has only one TDC
is the d15b7 interchangeable with d16z6 crank pulley?
i like it because its has only two slots for the alt and ac belt and its lighter.
i do not know if this info help but its something i like to throw out if someone can help.
thx

so you think maybe my problem is in the camshaft of not having an adjustable cam gear?
you think putting my stock camshaft will fix that timing issue?

I would get a cam gear.
See if this sheds some light. It has links to other resources.

ATM i dont have an adjustable cam gear but it seems like that camshaft may be the problem ill go switch it back to stock and see if my timing is right.

Re: d16z6 vitara build timing belt on TDC?
right now timing is in red mark.
took it out for a test drive and it well stall if i accelerate just a little bit
i dont have a wideband but an a/f gauge and its reading kinda rich right now
should i turn down the fuel? or retard ignition timing? of the low compression
thanks

Re: d16z6 vitara build timing belt on TDC?
well i retard timing 2 degrees and stalling went away
i drove it around the block and seems okay for now
got to get used to that clutch and light flywheel lol

If I were you I'd finish building the engine, including turbo kit, and get it tuned. Makes no sense to try and get it running in this condition when you're going to be modifying it in short order down the road. Never seen anyone that built and boosted and engine go about it this way.
Cal your tuner and discuss it.
