D16z6 head on D16y8 block
Hi, so I blew my head gasket this week-end but the car is still drivable. I need my car during the week so I bought a d16z6 head so that I can work on it during the week, get it resurfaced and rebuilt before I swap it on and change my gasket this next week-end. I plan on doing a slight port job and milling it 0.040 degrees.
So after some searching I found that I need d16y8 head studs except for the bolt next to the vtec solenoid. My d16y8 is converted to obd1 so I think the distributor wont be an issue.
What else should I know? Can I use the same timing belt? Will the cam timing be off?
I do have an adjustable cam gear that I will put on that is laying around.
Thanks for all the help.

Depending on how much is shaved off the head for resurfacing you may need that adjustable cam gear just to get the tension & timing right (had to do that myself). But if nothing is shaved off the head then no, it should be all good.
Use a timing belt for the Y8.
As for the distributor, I don't know if the Y8 distributor will bolt to the Z6 head(haven't tried).
As for the head bolts/studs, I'm not sure why the Z6 uses a 140mm long bolt and the Y8 uses a 120.5mm bolt. You could probably tell by comparing the heads, either the bolt hole is deeper in the Z6 head, or the bolt holes in the block of the Z6 are deeper. Figure that small difference out and you'll know which bolts/studs to get.

some things like the power steering bracket bolts in the z6 head are different and thats about it. you can use all y8 bolts it will work fine.

The flange on the Z6 distributor is unique and only works with the Z6 head. You can do the ghetto method (two bolts...if that) but I don't recommend that.

For the head studs I got the answers while searching. I read I can use all y8 bolts except the one next to the vtec solenoid, it needs to be a z6. I will shave the head 0.040'' since a z6 head lowers your compression on a y8 block (34.60 cc chambers instead of 32.xx or something like that)
For the distributor, the car had a z6 in it 2 years ago and it blew, when my friend swapped the y8 (it was his car) he had problems with the distributor and made one with both the ones he had. Hopefully I can make it fit the right way if not I will get a z6 dizzy.
thanks for the help!
