ive been getting a fairly loud ping...sounds almost more like a knock....the motor has abround 120k on it...should I try retarding the timing or could it be a sensor...anyone had this problem. its mostly throughout the higher rpm's in second and third. its just agrivating and yes hopefully after the new year a swap will be done. but id like to get this taken care of. thanks all

Well I had the same knocking/pinging sound when I bought my 96 dx hatch d16y7 and it bothered me so much, that I started to check the timing and found that the distributor was fully retarded, and then I found out when I was changing my timing belt and water pump that the the reason they retarded the timing was they got the timing belt off 1 or 2 teeth on the cam pulley and to make up for it they retarded the ignition timing. Well the car sounded like crap before, and didn't have much power, and it idled really rough like it wanted to die all the time. After changing the timing belt and aligning everything to TDC and then driving the car and getting it warmed up I shot the crankshaft pulley with my old timing gun and adjusted the ignition timing until it was perfect. Now the car runs and sounds so much different and seems to pull pretty strong for the y7. Also did distributor cap and rotor and plugs which all the parts where good old OEM Genuine Honda Parts. That fixed the problem with me, but I don't know if that is your problem. Well hope this helps, Jordan.

the timing was the first thing I could really think of. ill use a gun and check it out. but thanks for that input. i really appreciate it. I wonder if the last time we did a tune up on it if we knocked the distributor outta wack a bit. cause come to think of it, i dont think it knocked before the tune up. anyways thanks again
