cv boot dmg on axle help
My Cv boot on my 1999 si is ripped open on the axle and has no grease in it. and when i turn the wheel slightly it makes a repeating very light thump noise. i know i have to replace it but is there a way to just replace the boot not the entire driveshaft? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: cv boot dmg on axle help (99simoder)
when my friends axel went out on this teg ls we could not get it out of the trany to put the new one in. so we took the akel out of the end repacked the grease and put the new one in. so i spose you could re pack the grease and put a new boot on it. i would not do thakt because your bearings are probably bad and the joint wont be as tight.

you could just rebuild the axle, shouldn't be too difficult, especially if you've done it before. if you're looking for an easy fix, you can go to your local auto parts store and get a quick boot. these don't require you to disassemble the axle shaft. these aren't as durable as your standard cv boots (from what i've seen), but seem to do the trick. good luck on it. if it becomes a bit of a pain in the ***, just pick up a new axle from the nearest parts store. relatively easy install on hondas

All i wanted to do was change the boot and re grease it. A new boot is like £5 so just take the brakes off.... expose part of the axle... slide off the old boot and put the new one on and grease it up and then put everything back together??? Thats basically it isnt it. I was going to buy a new axle when i get my engine work done. Just need a quick fix for now...

You have to take the joint apart to replace a conventional boot. Most auto parts stores here (not sure about in the UK) carry split boots that are designed to slide on from the side, so you don't have to take anything apart to replace the boot. I've had good luck in the past hosing out CV joints with solvent (spray cans of brake cleaner) and packing them with fresh grease, then putting on a new boot.
