My friend has an Integra with a catback exhaust. When the car is on, there is a hard hitting sound on the bottom of the car because the larger pipes hit floor panel. I put a sponge in between them and it worked perfectly, but only lasts for an hour until the sponge burns up on the exhaust pipe. What could I shove in between or wrap the pipe with that has a cushioning material, yet wont burn up?

Just use exhaust wrap and wrap up the area where its hitting.

i used a piece of rubber and wrapped it around a few times and held it with a hose clamp.

^^ You would probably have a slight burning rubber smell... Not good.
Well, how big is the gap between the pipe and the underside of the body? Just wrap it in the tightest spot and layer it so it fits somewhat snug on the floor. Should be fine I think. You could even go as far as to weld a hanger and use an oem rubber mount to hold it in place better.

It is about a 2 centimeter gap, I will buy some exhaust wrap and wrap it thick on the spot so it'll hit the floor panel but be snug enough so it wouldnt rattle against the floor panel.

I bought this Theromo Shield material from Napa yesterday. The guy said it's a very good alternative to expensive exhaust wrap. I took it because it looked like it was very thick and soft, it had a 2000 degree radiant heat reflection, and an adhesive backing. I read it just right now and it says, not for use on exhaust pipes or headers. What should I do? It says it can withstand the exhaust temperatures, the guy at Napa said it would work. I just want it done, and never have to worry about it, should i still use it?

...how about just fixing the shoddy exhaust instead? you should only need to run like 3" max, it shouldn't hit anywhere.

I would suggest attempting to adjust the hangers and heat shields to allow proper clearance. How large is the exhaust tubing?

exhaust does not get that hot back by the muffler. ive tried to pop popcorn out of my rsx muffler. which has a short exhaust and it never popped one cornell. i never had any rubber smell. you can almost touch ur muffler after driving. we are not talking about a header here

ive tried i was bored with a bag of popcorn in the car waiting for someone for a while but no dice. ive also tried lighting a cigg off my cast turbo log manifold and that didn't work either. i would have to conclude its not really hot enough to burn anything.

Thats a good idea, I will try to modify his exhaust hangers and let his exhaust sit lower. Damn, I had the reciept on my sun visor, and my reciept flew out when I was driving. I am so unlucky.

Success! I modified my friends exhaust hangers earlier today at shop class. I bent it so that the mid pipe will sit lower, and have atleast 4 centimeters of clearance. My friend is very happy now, lol.
