Civic 1996 black smoke / idling issue
Hi guys, noob here...
my civic is actually 1995 model, but there was an engine swap by the previous owner ( who seems to know nothing about the detsils of the engine😡 . So for all i know my engine coukd be anywhere from 1996 to 1998.
I found out that the engine is a SO4 model while i had the timing belt and water pump changed.
coming back to my current issue, i had CEL on from the time i bought this car about a month ago. A check threw out code iD 0902, which seemingly was the distributor. Changed a re-conditioned distributor and the CEL dissapeared.
But before i changed the distributor, the car suddenly begain to have idle issues ranging from 800rpm to 1300rpm, which is when the mechanic suggested it coukd be the distributor, but obvioulsly the issue of idling is not solved.
i also had the throttle body cleaned and later i realised my car begin to emit black smoke- not in big volume but it is mild.
surfring forums tells me that it coukd be the IAC or coolant temp sensor. I threw in a new air filter while changing the timing belf.
ive asked a couple of mechanics to service the IAC but they seem hesitant and want me to change a new one. Have spent quite a sum in the one month i got it, not to mention a failing master break pump which i just repalced today and the earlier repalcement of the master and slave clutch pumps.
you guys have any advice ? I am thinking of giving it a diy at the IAC. I used to be good with my bike previously but never have touched a car engine section!
What say u guys ....

Re: Civic 1996 black smoke / idling issue
What is your location (country)?
The engine code (e.g., D15B8, D15B7, D15Z1, D16Z6) should be visible when you open the hood.
Remove and clean the IACV.

Re: Civic 1996 black smoke / idling issue
Well ive been trying to define what engine i have which still is a mystery. I suspect its a JDM. My engine code starts with ZCxxxxxx (cant rmber the numbers), which is stated on the engine. I cant find anything that states such as D16y7 or any sort of those.
if it states ZCxxxxxx, would there also be another code of such examples which you have given ?
Ok, what i am wondering is, if i remove the two hoses joint to the iacv, would the coolant gush out ? Do i have to drain a prt of the coolant before pulling out the hose ?
much appreciate your reply.

Yes. The IACV is attached to two coolant hoses. Draining some coolant from the radiator would make the job less messy.
After the IACV is cleaned and remounted to the throttle body or intake manifold, re-attach the hoses and then top off the radiator and reservoir with coolant and bleed the cooling system.
