Car died on the road..piston road bearings???
I drive a 98 EX coupe, D16Y8, around 250 000 km. A while back, I started hearing a knock, and then soon after it died on me on the road. I took it in to a mechanic, who got it started again, but didn't bother opening it up to find the problem, and told me that based on the sound and mileage, it needs a new engine. I then tried to drive it around the block, and it didn't make it to the corner. Although the mechanic never told me exactly what's wrong, I suspect that it has to do with the piston rod bearings, but I really don't know.
I decided to save up for the new engine, so the car's been sitting in my driveway. I'm just wondering if I really should be looking into a used engine, or if I should look more deeply into fixing the problem. Now when I try to start the car, it just clicks. Any ideas? Does it sound like piston road bearings?

Ohhhh ya...that "quality" mechanic charged me 47$...wouldn't give me the keys back until I paid, although I have a spare set

Question 1) Did you take it to mechanic to have it diagnosed?
Question 2) Did he make a diagnosis?
Sounds to me like the answers are yes and yes.
That is why you owe him $47.00
You owe him for a service which uses his skill and expertise.
If you think you know so much, why did you take it to a mechanic?
Mechanics have a right to earn a living too. They don't work for free.
If your bearing are toast... then yes.. you need a new engine.
It's very easy to tell by listening to a motor if a bearing is shot

First off, I never said I know so much...and I'm pretty sure it's obvious that I took it in because I don't. However, you kill yourself in your own post. You say yourself that it is easy to tell, yet I am still paying for this particular mechanic's skill and expertise. He didn't even mention rod bearings at all to me..just a simple "you need a new motor, we'll go find one for you and write up the quote". I'm making my own assumption by saying rod bearings, this is based nothing on what he said. He treated me as if I was a dumb student, although I do know a thing or two. Usually when I pay a hard earned 50$, I would like something in return. I have no problem paying for a TRUE diagnostic, as to what particular part he suspects is toast..
Also, from what I have heard, shot bearings do not necessarily mean go out and get a new engine, although I am not really sure. This is why I'm asking ppl who know more than me here on honda-tech..

Ok... maybe he should have told you that you have a broken bearing.. but the repair is the same... another motor (rebuild or install a used motor)
Most people want to know what needs to be done to fix it and how much it's gonna cost.
It is usually cheaper to get a junkyard motor and install it, than to rebuild a motor.
And yes.. if you have a shot bearing, you need to build the motor, as all the little broken bearing pieces are flying around the inside of your motor, and you probably have to have the crank and rod machined at the least if not replaced

Re: Car died on the road..piston road bearings??? (Crazydave)
ok, but is there any way to tell for sure if it's a bearing? I mean the engine was knocking, but I have no idea for sure what was causing it.
I just don't want to end up spending a lot of money when it might be something more simple than bearings, although knocking is always a major problem I would think.

You can drain the oil into a clean oil bucket.
Then remove the oil pan from you engine.
If you see a lot of metal flakes and chunks, then you most likely have a broken/spun bearing.

sounds like you toasted your bearings. Which yea, the engine can be rebuilt. But if you are saving for an engine, you are better off just doing the engine, it is normally cheaper than a rebuild.

the reason he didnt tell you exactly what is wrong is because he would have spent several hours taking apart the motor and then would charge you several hundred dollar for the time he spent and you would still need to replace the whole motor so he was actually saving you money as for what you should do to fix it b18b swaps are pretty cheap and have more power than any d-series.

any decent wrench for a living knows the death sounds of a rod bearing.
