Speed sensor failure??
Ok here's my issue...I was on my way to work and I was getting on the on-ramp to the interstate in my 98 dx civic hatch 5spd and i was in 4th gear moving pretty swiftly (probably around 5500rpm but cant tell for sure because cluster is tach-less) and as soon as I engaged the clutch and shifted into 5th, the speedometer went from around 85 mph to 0 in a split second and the CEL came on. I was worried that i blew the motor but the car continued to run and drive perfectly normal. No smoke no shakes no nothing. I have not had the chance to get the CEL read because when I got home I took the grille, headlights and front bumper off to replace bumper support and rad support from previous accident (previous owner hit a dog and tweaked both a bit and broke headlight brackets) so it cant be driven until the rest of my parts come in. I thought maybe the cluster just crapped out on me and i had an extra cluster from my 99 hatch laying around so i swapped it out and still had the same problem. My thoughts are a bad speed sensor located on the tranny but i am not sure. Car still starts right up and drives fine just don't have a cluster with a tach and now the speedometer doesn't work at all (just stays pinned at 0mph) so its kind of annoying. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

Re: Speed sensor failure??
You can pull the code without a scanner, try this method:

Re: Speed sensor failure??
Ok I tried that with the paper clip in slots 4 and 9 and at first when i turned the key to the on position the light would come on for about a second and blink once then remain steady. I tried it a few more times to be sure of what code i was getting and the same thing every time then i did it without the paper clip in and the same thing. Then i put the paper clip back in and tried and no light at all...now i cant get the damn CEL to come on at all yet my speedo still doesn't work...I think i somehow cleared the code...FML help me please :\

Did you even read what I said? It did the same amount of blinking for the same amount of time, with or without jumping the service connector and now it wont come on at all.

Thanks for all your help guys!! I am reluctant but not ashamed to admit I am a n00b and was doing the whole paperclip coding thing wrong but it was in fact a 17 (speed sensor) so I will be getting that within the next few days. Looking forward to learning lots more from you guys and once again thank you VERY much.

Before you run out and buy a new Speed Sensor, test the electrical connector with a multimeter. I just helped a guy on here who had bought a new VSS and it turned out his connector went bad. Your problem might be as simple as fixing an open wire or replacing a connector.

Attitude ? Troflcopter.
Avoid jumping into a non-serious matter and turning it into an argumentative conclusion.
Please go more in depth, and describe how cocky my personality is based on what I
have stated. If the falling little yellow guy, and my question prior to the symbol posted
up above tickles your cherry then you have seriously got some issues underneath
your neck.
I was trying to be nice, but you responded in a very rude way leaving me with no
other option.

Check you connector. I had replaced the VSS and was getting ready to replaced te cluster ended up being the connector was corroded up the butt. You can also test your VSS as well found this out after I replaced mine.

Ok...My other hatch is at my parents house in another state but i go there often so I will just switch them next time i go. Quick question...Is it normal for D16y7's to have s40 trans? I always thought s40's were Si trannys.
