Icon6 Camshaft has play

i have a 1993 Honda Del Sol with a d15b7 block and d16z6 head and there is a loud rattling sound coming from the head. i pulled the rocker assembly off and the camshaft has play in it forward and backward, if you spin the cam ccw it spins with the dizzy and moves about 2-3mm forward and back every 1/4 turn and about a 1/2 inch when you pull on it. there is no bent valves the compression is 210 on every cylinder. i cant figure out what is causing it. any help is appreciated.

The engine is sideways. Are you saying play to and from timing belt to distributor? Or play from intake manifold to exhaust manifold?

Front to Back is easily confusable for many.

You could be beyond your 0.02" service limit for end play on the camshaft.

Here are the pages to check your camshaft:

If all that check outs, the other thing I know that can make a lot of racket in the Z6 motors is the Lost Motion Assemblies. I'd first make sure the camshaft is within service limits though after your description of how the camshaft moves in the head.

i found out the issue, the cam is within spec and the lost motion assembly is good. i changed the cam bolt and it has stopped making the noise, ive drove it for about 20 miles today and its been good since, minus the stripped valve cover bolts lol.
