Default Bye bye power steering, hello Manual rack!!!!

Yes, I am swapping out the power steering rack from my 2000 Civic Si and throwing in a manual steering rack from a 96 cx. Obviously the reason that I want to do this is to save some weight, even though it is just a little bit. Other than the obvious steering rack, what else will I need for the install? I plan on tossing on the energy suspension master kit while the motor is out as well. Has anyone else done this? I know it isn't that bad because I used to have a 92 dx with no powersteering. Any insight helps people!!

all you will need is the rack and the universal joint that connects the jack to the steering column. the joint is different because the shaft on the manual rack in thinner. Other than that you are good to go. mabe some helpful steps here. Its for swapping power into a non power but the steps willbe nearly identical.

You do know what you're getting into...right? The rack is difficult to get out when the motor is in...I'm assuming your not pulling the motor.

Are you aware of the "looped rack" modification. Basically, you remove all PS components and loop the hose that goes to the pump and add a breather.

There is a guy who sells kits to do this...I'll find a link for you...

edit - heres a link... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=563116

You may already know all about this...just trying to save you some headache.

because i when driven hard or racing on the track, power steering makes the car unpredictable. its kinda hard to explain but when cornering hard the power steering tries to help you and i don't like it. IM the drive of the car i want to control it. and with out power steering i feel more intune with the road.

i don't know if any of this makes sense but its my personal opinion. Plus that fact that no civic or integra weighs over 3000 pounds and anything under that doesn't have a real need for power steering in my book, and if you feel it does go work out

Don't loop the lines on the PS rack. It will be much more difficult to turn than if you get a manual rack as you already are.

The weight loss is pretty nice but are you aware that you are unleasing more power from the engine by reducing parasitic loss on the crank? I would have thought you would have mentioned that before the weight savings. Get yourself an electric water pump while you're at it. That **** will rev up fast.

bah its not that hard it just takes some time. Theres a difference between something being physically difficult and for something to be a bit time consuming.

dooooood,
you WANT the power steering rack!
it has a "better" ratio!
just loop the lines, I think that there is a diy-how-to in the ITR forum archives.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=184202

doh! or sell your PS rack to an autocrossing junkie that NEEDS the quicker steering in their CX hybrid

Most important thing to consider in all of this is the steering ratio you will end up with. If the rack you have now has a better ratio for racing then I wouldn't even condier taking it out.

Gaining or losing 2hp or 20-30 pounds is really not that important.

Ive had both looped PS rack and a Manual rack and I love the manual much more.....I dont know how much of a difference in ratio you think there is, its VERY ******* NEGLIGABLE, You can hardly tell the diff. Besides the manual rack is more stable feeling at speed. Wit the looped rack, going 80+ and the car want to turn right out from under you, Oh.....and to all the ******S that are gonna act like you cant Auto-x with a manual rack, or that its sooo mcuh harder. Ive done solo2 events with both and I like the manual more.

my ps rack is looped on my g2 integra, and its much easier to turn than my friends manual rack on his 96 civic hatchback.

I run manual rack, it rocks.
no experience with the power steering rack but I knew rodney ran a PS because of the better/faster ratios.
