Default B18c Type r in Ek hatch Running good... then bad..... then good.....then bad...

Hey all,

SO heres the break down, I have a 2001 jdm b18c type r swap complete into my ek hatch......36mm axles, jdm type r cluster, running obd1.

It's been an awesome car..... til about a week ago..........as I slowly pull through the rpm say I hit 4000 the tach kinda jumps up and down still around 4000 then smooths out and goes away, stop at a light pull through nice and slow again.. this time same thing but at like 6000 or 5000 then goes away (just the tach) motor still runs okay doesn't sounds like it's missing....THEN recently it runs hard to about 6-7000 rpm then my rpm moves erratically like explained above and the car falls flat on it's face, I don't understand what it could be, it feels like a turbo car that hits fuel cut, Im wondering how I can start to eliminate things as a possible cause of this rpm movement and the car missing and jumbling around it feels like it doesn't want to go past 7000...... then at the next stop light she PULLS all the way up NO problem............I have an 800 CCA red top battery brand new, fresh ground straps all around ... (reason for stating a new battery is the tach moves up and down as if the battery were dead when you try to start a car) Think it could be a dizzy going bad.... or a fuel pump going bad ?

anyone ... help ... please...... I need my daily fix of vtec......

-Lee

Crank angle sensor is one, ignition control module is another, some call it the igniter. Distributorking.com is your friend.

Don't know why you threw in the 5 lug swap info though.

when was the last time you did a tune up? first check the spark plugs then check the dizzy.

I believe the crank angle sensor (one popping outta the timing belt area) isn't being used on my motor since it's OBD1 converted... I believe it uses the dizzy to determine engine position... not 1000% sure on that though.....

and good tip on the igniter... but if it;s the igniter I might just get a new dizzy anyways since it's inside...

check your ignition system....start with ur plug wires....if they ground out on the solinoid cap or the valve cover itll do that

If my information is correct the crank angle sensor is inside the distributor.

This is some great info....
so heres an update......

I checked the plugs... they are all pretty white.... (not headgasket, since Im not eating up coolant at all) so shes a little lean.

I ordered new plugs the OEM NGK ones.... and some MSD 8.5mm ignitions wires, Im going to start there......I need to do that anyways ..... it is definitely in need of a tune up......

Im running an obd1 ECU,

the ground near the thermostat is tight and there is a ground strap right near it going to the body... all tested with a multimeter (continuity test) to ensure the grounds are sound and connected well.

When I put the motor in I used the dizzy that was on the b-series motor (single plug style) but my harness is the 2 plug obd1 style, so I made a jumper harness to make it plug and play, I used the d series alternator and used the housing of the type r alternator to make it fit, but ya I basically put the motor in ... and ran it ...... it ran good for about 2 months... then this all started.....

on the way home today if I was just crusing at like 5000 the tach would jump up and down still around the 5000 mark ... and the motor sounded like it was missing just a touch....

all good ideas here guys... once again HT has been a great help.... I'll keep everyone who has chimed in updated ... just waiting for my plugs and wires to arrive ... sometime in the next week or so .... so no vtec til then I guess....

Ignition control module is my best guess. Another problem is the bearings can go bad in the distributor, you should see if you can borrow someone elses to see but I doubt it.

thanks kidnkorner....... Im going to try the basic tune up stuff first.... then get into the distributor.......I guess I could pull my cap off and check for that residual dust from arching......

If the tach is jumping then it is definitely something ignition related. If the wires/plugs/basic tune-up didn't fix it then it is your distributor. Common failure item on these motors.

Check your distributor hold down bolts. If they are loose, it will make the tach do that. Otherwise, +1 on the ICM.

okay guys ... all my parts came in .....

so I installed the OEM recommended NGK plugs and the msd 8.5mm wires..... still got the tach jump ..... so I put a distributor in .... and she doesnt have any sort of jumble or stutter going through the rpm .... feels good .... no missing.

so that being said, Im going to test the distributor when I get a chance to see what exactly failed..... if it is the igniter then I'll replace it.... is NEC the good oem replacement one ??

and .. while were on the topic of distributors...... how do people find those external coils and upgraded caps and rotors ???

I was thinking about doing it...... the MSD stuff.....

IMHO, the external coil is a waste of money. However, if you want eye candy, go for it. Factory Honda internals (including coil) are good to more RPM's than you'll ever run with your engine.
