Default b18a swap into my 93 hatch

here's the deal, my friend has a crx with a b18a and a 93 coupe w/ a d15. he really wants a d16 and id like a b18 in the hatch, so we thought about trading my d16z6 for his b18a. i couldn't find anything on b18a's and wanted some opinions if it were a good idea or bad idea? and would i need the usual axles, wiring harness, and ecu or are there things im missing?
thanks

Same as any other B swap into a Civic except for two things.

The B18A came with a cable transmission and your Civic is hydraulic. So you will need any B series hydraulic transmission like the later B16's or a B18B.

If the B18A is older than 92, it's OBD0. Your Civic is OBD1. The B18As from 92 and 93 are OBD1. I doubt it's very difficult to convert a 90 or 91 B18A to OBD1, but I haven't been down that road so I don't know for sure. But whatever you do, you will need an OBD1 ECU. So get the ECU from a non-GSR 92 or 93 Integra.

if i have to convert it to obd1 would i need to get a wiring harness and ecu or could i use like you said an ecu from a teg and use this? http://www.boomslang.us/obd0to1.htm

also since its non-vtec what would i need to make it vtec?

i read somewhere that the b18b wiring harness is the same as a d16z6...you just had to wire in a knock sensor...will this be the same case for the b18a im wanting to put in

If your not scraped for cash I really recommend you try and get a b18b. The b18a isn't very impressive for a few reasons...

And like suspended hatch said, you'll need a hydro tranny, conversion harness, and different mounts than a regular b18 swap.

If you want to make it vtec it's actually a lot of work for little gain in my opinion, you have to swap the heads, do some wiring, get a vtec ecu, and put up with having a motor that lacks oil squirters which help with reving to higher rpms.

for the cost of doing a vtec head swap you're really close to having enough money for a good used turbo kit.

vtec really isnt all that important, its my dd, and i do wanna turbo it but im gonna wait till after i get out of school next december. so i can either swap the b18a in it and plan turbo for it later...or keep the d16 and turbo it

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by samurai_x6 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i read somewhere that the b18b wiring harness is the same as a d16z6...you just had to wire in a knock sensor...will this be the same case for the b18a im wanting to put in</TD></TR></TABLE>

Neither the b18a/b nor the d16z6 use a knock sensor.
If you want to put a obd1 b18a into your civic you need to:
-Reuse your stock harness(there will be a few plugs that need changed)
-Get a hydro-cable conversion
-depending on what axle combination he used in the crx, you may need axles and a half shaft(94-up integra).
-You cant use his shift linkage, so you will need a shift linkage and shifter(94-up integra).
-Then just drop it in. The obd1 b18a ecu will plug right in and you will be good to go.

Thank you. I don't know why people say he needs a conversion harness. Even if it was an OBD0 motor, HE HAS AN OBD1 car with an OBD1 harness already in it. But as he stated, he has an OBD1 motor.

Sometimes Honda Tech would be better if stupid people didn't post at all.

Yerp.. Im doin this same swap right now. Cept I swapped the obd1 18A (with the cable trans) into my automatic 93 Coupe. It was a bitch for me for that reason (auto to manual) But now that the hard part is over (moving the trans mount bracket) its smooth sailing. So as far as your question goes... I would say go for it, the LS is a great motor I have had three of them all in CRX's and loved every one. Reliable and torqy as ****... Great motor to beat up.

P.S.. I used AVID mounts and AVIDs Hydro to Cable setup.. (Although I havnt gotten to actually putting the Slave on the trans yet so we will see how that goes

It should be a great swap, what tranny are you using?
