Default B16a2 Cooling Issue

I need some opinions on where to start in my approach to fixing the issue.

First off, my fan never turns on.
Second, my cluster never reads hot.

However in light of it all, when sitting at idle, my radiator reservoir will begin to boil and steam and my hoses are abnormally hot. When driving, I guess the car is air cooling ok in the absence of the fan, but like I said at idle, the motor is getting way too hot. What do you guys think of the issue?

Start by bleeding the cooling system.

This may take 20-30 minutes:

1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.

2) Push the dash heater lever/**** to MAX heat.

3) Follow the directions in the diagram below

Could that explain the fan issue as well? I appreciate the help

Yes it could. If an air pocket prevents coolant from circulating over the fan switch, then it may not trigger the fan to turn on.

Alright. I really appreciate it. I'll update this tomorrow when I get a chance to do it around mid day.

I followed the above instructions. However, after running the car for a while, the fan still doesn't come on. As a further detail, it appears the lower radiator hose is remaining cool while the upper hose is getting really hot. Let me know what you think

First check if you have power going to the fan if you do then use a fused jumper wire to try and run the ran to see if it works. If it doesn't replace the fan. Also check your fan switch and thermostat.

What did you observe during the bleed? How long did you do the procedure? Did the engine overheat at any time during the procedure? Did you notice whether gas bubbles were continually present in the radiator coolant?

I let the car run probably 20 min. I allowed the gauge to get up to a normal running temperature and run a while, however when the fan didn't come on, the upper hose was getting hot, and the radiator coolant began to steam off, I turned it off. Should I run it longer? I just don't want to damage anything.

You may want to replace the thermostat and then try the bleed procedure again. If the fan still does not turn on during the procedure, then jump the fan switch 2P connector to this whether the fan now runs. If so, replace the fan switch.

I'm going to go grab the thermostat from Advanced Auto while I wait for a response, but I also found this once I took my intake off. The clip was originally off, however, even when I plugged it back on, nothing seemed to work differently or fix the problem. Its right there at the lower radiator hose. I'm guessing its a temp sensor/switch, but does that one dictate the fan?

Yes, that's the fan switch connector. Insert a jumper wire across the two terminals of the free connector and then turn the key to ON(II). The fan should run.

Ok, the fan is running. Thank god. I appreciate that. Leads me to a second question though. With that clip on its not running. Now if you look at that picture, you can see a line towards the base of the sensor which shows where the clip goes to. It doesn't clip all the way in. I'm guessing maybe because I'm using the harness off my d16y7 and maybe the b16a2 requires a slightly different clip there?

Also, is my temp gauge on my cluster not showing me over heating for any particular reason? Are there still problems I should be approaching even if I get my fan running without just jumping it?

That's possible. Try to find a compatible connector at a salvage yard and splice it to your wires.

I would leave the fan switch connector jumped until you find a replacement connector. Go ahead and replace the thermostat and bleed the cooling system again. If all goes well, then take the car for a test drive to see whether the engine no longer overheats.

I only ever have a problem with it really at idle. The ram air of driving usually gives me no problems unless stopped. So I have the car running right now. I'm guessing that should yield some results. However I'm still going to change out the thermostat and re-bleed the system.
