Here is my take on this..
About three years ago, I was running on an auto pr4 on my b18b motor. After I switch to a manual ecu, I notice no change in performance. I believe that the fuel map is the same for the auto and manual ecu...I think. Similarily, I don't think you are losing power.

The fuel maps are exactly the same, you are correct.

Like everyone above said, OBD1 is no big deal. BUT an OBD2 ECU can not be converted easily, and it does matter auto/manual car with the right ECU.
The one or two CELs you will throw for auto-trans solinoids should put the ECU into limp home mode so the car will run like crap.
