Any brand(s) or type of gasket maker similar to Hondabond?
I've got quite a few flavors of gasket maker in my cabinet out in the garage already. Are there any out there that are similar to Hondabond? I'm getting ready to replace the oil pan gasket and it calls for gasket maker in a couple spots. Just wondering.

Hmm, I don't think I have that one. I have Permatex Ultra Copper, rated to 700F. Looks like from what I've been reading the black stuff has better oil resistance, where as the copper stuff has better heat resistance. Sound about right?

Basically, yes. If it's meant to be around oil/fuel, I would use ultra black. If it's being used for exhaust, red. I can't think of any applications off the top of my head for ultra copper in the world of Honda.

I know Hondabond is up there in price, but it really works VERY well. I'd pony up the $ and get a tube. Try to find it cheap online.

Alrighty... thanks, man. I'm not well versed in the various RTV applications. I'll probably head down to the parts store and get a little packet of the black goop later today before I start the oil pan gasket.

That's actually not too much worse than large tubes of Permatex at the parts store. I might take a trip to the dealer today.

Hondabond is not sold in Canada, so the dealers sell the exact same stuff under this name.........

As has been said, black rtv is the only thing that comes to mind that would work just as well. Really though, hondabond is the way to go.

I guess if you think about it, it's almost like they're all color coded for you. Black for oil, Orange (copper) for super high temp, Grey for vibration and Blue for water.

Makes sense. The grey goop claims to have good (but not great) resistance to oil and high temps, and is additionally resistant to vibration. I think VersaChem makes an off brand that's cheaper than Permatex too. They call it 'Mega Grey' instead of 'Ultra Grey' lol... these companies and their names for this s**t...

It's very much sold in Canada. I bought my last tube a few months ago.
It's not the same stuff. Ultragray sucks. We used to use ultragray when I worked for Honda and we had so many '06 - '11 civics come back after we fixed that rear cover leak still leaking that we switched to actual Hondabond.
As far as the original question, Briggs & Stratton's liquid gasket for valve cover gaskets on OHV engines is exactly the same as Hondabond, but it costs the same for a tube that's only about 1/3 of the size of a tube of Hondabond.

never had any trouble with permetex and id say its identical to hondabond. all my motors have permetex gaskets on them and so do my sport bikes. have never ever had a leak. and many times i dont use a gasket just the permatex.
always use grey though.
and use the copper on my headgaskets and exhaust gaskets always.

I have used the Ultra Grey with good results, I used it to reseal the case halves of my 5 speed, corners of the valve cover gasket, etc. It dries firm, it does not leak, it looks like OEM sealer. I'd say it is similar. I don't know if they're the same, but you could fool me. I think a lot of trouble with sealant comes from the skill of the user; All it takes is a little bit, applied in the right place. I would bet there is far more RTV failure from sloppy workmanship than the quality of the product.
In the picture - this 5 speed has remained clean and drip free for 26,000 miles after using Permatex. You have to take a little time with it to get a perfect bead, but many folks would not know this wasn't a factory seal job. It just looks like a nice low miles transmission...
