No compression? Timing is off?

Try checking the timing.

Cam timing = mighta jumped a tooth on the belt, ignition timing is set by the distributor position, changed by loosening the 3 bolts on the dizzy mounting flange and rotating it.

You need a timing light to check timing. There are 3 hash marks on the crank pulley and if you look down the side of the timing belt cover, there should be a mark or groove that lines up with another mark on the block, and you use these to "sight" the hash marks on the crank.

I'll see if me or anyone else can find a "How-To" on checking timing. I know how to on a b-series, not sure exactly on d's.

This could cause flames out your intake

Ignition timing I do not believe will do this. I've fully retarted and advanced my timing many o times and never had the problem your experiencing.

I was suggesting more along the lines of cam timing. If your belt is old and you goose it just right you could cause the belt to "skip a tooth" which could result in a no start/heavy start, or like you explained flames from the intake.
