Default 99 civic si - can't communicate with the ECU

hey guys, i just bought another civic si with some mods on it already, one question though, i tried doing a scan for any codes in general & i couldn't connect to the ecu, i'm thinking the previous had the ecu reflashed or remapped .But there's no problem with the car though, it drives find.

Any suggestions, what'z going on guys?

Take off the passenger side kick panel. There will probably be a obd2b to obd1 jumper harness with an obd1 ecu (most likely chipped). Or... check the "back up" fuse in the engine bay fuse box and see if it is blown. Should be a brown 7.5 fuse. Check all fuses just in case, but i think it's the back up one that saves data and controls the ecu being able to be scanned.

Yeah the back up fuse supplies power to the DLC that thing you plug the scanner into for the ones that dont know what a DLC is and it may be blown. That or it has been converted to OBD1 and since OBD1 does not do live data and code reading like a OBD2 one does it will not work with a scanner.

Actually, fuse 43 supplies power to the DLC, not the Back Up fuse.

thanks alot, fuse 43 it is, im gonna check it in the morning, yea i think the car was chipped before i got it, cause it came with injen cold air intake, integra intake manifold, dc headers & apexi exhaust ( i think itz catback, gotta check)... im not really worried, i would like to be able to give the car an overall scan to make sure everything is ok, you know what i mean.

Start by checking the ECU. If it is OBD1, then your OBD2 port will never communicate with it even if the fuse is good.

Oh ok thanks. I will need to check wiring diagrams to make sure.

Use this to help for the ECU identification

http://www.hondata.com/techecuid.html

Also if it is a JDM ECU it will never communicate as well.
