Default 99 civic si Auto vtec-e

hi i have a 1999 honda civic si automatic

the bottom end is blown and i just want to replace the motor, i was told the motor is a VTEC-E and i am wondering if i can swap in a regular V-TEC or a non vtec without any wiring issues or any other issues that will throw a code and not allow me to pass an estest (in canada due to new OBD2 restrictions)

what is the difference between vtec-e and vtec? is it wiring, or internal?

thanks for any info you may have!

The engine should already be a regular vtec engine unless it was swapped. What does the block stamp say? It should be stamped D16Y8 where the block meets the transmission.

/\ correct, canadian si had the d16y8, which is what you would want to go with.

It is a d16y8 but the auto wrecker we called for another motor asked if te 6th digit on the vin was a 6 or a 7 , it's a 6 and he said it was a vtec-e so it threw me off a bit, I know the blocks are the same Im just wondering if the vtec e has any different wiring or if a regular d16y8 will be fine or a straight swap

VTEC-E saves you gas that's all.

The engine in it now is a regular vtec engine, it's not vtec-e. Your autowrecker is wrong.

6 is D16Y7 (non-vtec engine found in most '96 - '00 Civics)

7 is D16Y5, Vtec-E, found in the HX coupe (US only car and engine)

8 is D16Y8, SOHC vtec, found in the '96 - '00 Canadian Si/US EX

1 is B16A2, DOHC vtec, found in the '99 - '00 Canadian SiR/US Si

If your 6th digit is a 6 then its not an SI. SI's(EM1) came with the b16a2 motor which was VTEC. If your 6th digit is a 6 then its an ej6, meaning the car is a DX or LX model (which has the d16y7 motor) the EX model is the ej8 which has the d16y8 VTEC. Also SI's came only with 5spd tranny's, Sorry but i dont know who told you that was an SI

because in canada, si came with a y8. stop confusing people. OP- a y5 is totally different, will run like trash on your ecu, and you cannot use the y5's auto ecu because the hx had a cvt trans. find yourself a d16y8, problem solved.

tubbierainbows: In Canada, Si = US EX and SiR = US Si.

It's a constant source of confusion.
