99 Civic dx engine clicking from head - gets faster with higher rpm
There is a clicking sound coming from my engine head. It seems like it gets faster when I rev the engine. Could this be a lifter?

How do i check valve clearance? Also i seriously doubt its a knock bc it hasnt gotten any louder in months. Its actually been clicking like this for a while but it hasnt really gotten worse. But how do i check the valve. Also it seems like the head is shaking more than anything

if it sounds like a fast tick it is most likely excessive valve clearance. to check the valve clearance use a feeler guage and the other tools listed in the thread below. i am assuming your civic had a stock D series engine so here ya go

Now honestly I have never opened up an engine like that and i dont wanna try on my everyday car with no experience. So what would you say the cost of this repair is? And what would happen if I just let it be? Just a rough estimate because I have family who can take apart an engine clean it and put it back together in a day. So Ill just give them a couple bucks to do it.

Push yourself beyond your comfort level. You can do the job for free basically if you have feeler gauges and a 17-mm socket/ratchet to turn the crank pulley. Otherwise, you need to pay the man.

Now is there anyway to actually get this diagnosed before I even attempt to start this. Because ill be really annoyed if I do this and its not it.

How sure are you that the sound is coming from the head? Did you use an engine stethoscope to pinpoint the clicking to the head rather than the block or somewhere else?

Re: 99 Civic dx engine clicking from head - gets faster with higher rpm
Because I can just hear the noise coming from the head when I put my ear close to it. I honestly have no idea what this part is called but its the gear that spins the timing belt. But that is also clicking too it sounds like. But the thing is its not really getting any worse. Its been like this for a couple months and it really hasnt gotten any worse.

Go to Harbor Freight Tools and buy their $4 engine stethoscope. Use it to precisely pinpoint the noise(s) you are hearing. This will prevent you from doing unnecessary work. Post pictures of engine locations where the clicking sound is most intense.

No idea where that store is but im pretty sure pepboys will sell it. Ill just pick one up tomorrow. My dad is pretty good with cars and he said it is because I have headers on it and that hondas usually have a natural tick. But I have never heard of this happening to anyone else.

yea i bought the stephoscope today. It seems like the sound is coming from the entire head and no specific cyclinder. I checked the block and there was no clicking.
