Default 97 tranny problem d16y8

this is where the drivers side axle enters the tranny i dont really know much about cars but i'm thinking this is not good haha. does this call for a tranny replacement or can i live with it being broke like that, and im assuming this is the root cause for my tranny leak.

Yes, that would cause a transmission leak. There's supposed to be a seal there, as well as the (obvious) missing chunk of metal. You could replace just that part of the transmission, but it would be easier to just replace the entire transmission.
