Identifying tranny
My tranny is fucked up, I have thet input shaft bearing fucked up. I'm thinking of just getting myself another tranny and have if ready to replace, in order to avoid down time on my car. If I buy another tranny how can I determine that it is the one I need.
My car is a 97 civic Ex. I believe the engine is a D16y8. I want to get another tranny for my SOHC vTEC, what do I look for.
Another question, If I doi find another tranny should I get it rebuilt before I install it?
Thanks for any adive.

Re: Identifying tranny (civic_in_LA)
I believe all D series trannies will bolt up to your engine, but the one your car came with is the shortest geared (best) hydro D series tranny anyway. I don't know the actual stamp number on the tranny, sorry. Most people refer to it as a "d16y8 tranny" anyway.

Thanks for the attempt transpar_nt, I appreciate your assistance. I'm planning on actually going out to buy one so I would really like to know which tranny stamp number to look for, so that I could get the best tranny. SO if anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it.
Also, if I buy another tranny, most likely it will be used. So should I send it to get rebuilt? And approximatley how much would this cost?

Unless you're going to be modifying the tranny I don't think it would be worth it to get a D series rebuilt. You would be paying a lot more for a rebuild than the actual piece itself. You're best bet would be to find a known reliable seller on here or a local forum who has one for sale. They would have removed it themselves and therefore would know the condition of it from driving the car before it was out. This might be a little difficult to do however... If you were to buy one from a complete stranger/business I don't know. I'll be looking for a gsr tranny in the near future and this is a problem I'm facing as well. I'm a little scared to buy from whomever because there is no way of knowing the tranny's condition until it's opened up or installed.

Civic4Less,
My tranny is a 5 speed manual. Did you mean that you know how to check for the stamp number or that you know how much it would cost to rebuild. Please let me know. And are you from San Gabriel Valley?
What I am worried about is that I buy another tranny and that it will work for a week or two then mess up. It seems the input shaft bearing on these trannys goes out pretty often, or at least the way i drive. Does the input shaft bearing cost a alot to replace?

Re: (civic_in_LA)
If you search around this site you will most definately find all the info you need. I guarantee it. I'm sure this topic has been covered many times. I personally am not well educated on this subject because have never had to face this problem. As for the stamps there should be a sticker on the tranny. There's like 2 or 3 of them. But one will say S40 right on it. Easy to find and see. It's along the right side of it.
Edit: Found this while searching. So if you're up for a DIY: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=596873 Very credible source. Ask ANYONE on Honda-Tech.com.

What tranny is that?
According to 95% of this board, the d16y8 tranny is the best D series tranny made. The gears are comprable to the ones in a z6 tranny, but the steel shift forks are much stronger than the z6's aluminum ones.

So we know its a D16Y8 tranny, that has been established.
But if I go to buy one, how will I know that its a D16Y8 one versus the tranny for the LX and DX model? Anyone with info, please help.
And as for whoever wants to take the tranny off my hands, sure. You can take it for $50.
All I need to know is how to positively identify the EX tranny so I can pick it up. Once I get the info, I will be on my quest to buying one.
