Default 97 dx electrical problems.

Okay, first of all, the only cel I get during all this mess is code 70...
97 dx auto. should be all stock...

First of all, we're driving the car and then the battery starts letting off fumes, so we rolled down the windows and got it home...

Since the battery was bought in 07, we thought it was time for a new battery, a new battery comes in and it starts smoking like crazy the next day.

Last thing done to the car was a deck install, which we unplugged but it still went haywire.

kept trying to get it home but then it started acting up, battery smokes some more, then wipers go crazy, and the lights go dim. Sooner or later some wires burn from underneath the cluster. Then his car started to not accelerate like it used to and started throwing code 70, which what I've read is a solenoid, but I think this is a bigger problem.

Heres what I did.

Since we were 3 hours from home, I pulled the cluster and checked the wires... Can't find anything thats burnt. I pulled the bottom panel thing and checked, nothing's burnt. I even check his wiper motor wires and it's all good, the reason why I checked this was because his wiper is kind of funny. He has 3 settings on his switch, but only 2 works, and when he turns off his wipers it stops in place, instead of at the bottom.

I checked the fuse box under the hood, and he has all the correct fuses, I couldn't check the one under the steering column because he didn't have the little label.

I'm hoping for some brainstorming in here, and maybe some estimates for how much it should cost a shop to fix....

Here's what I come up with... Something, Idk what, caused the battery to start smoking. Then after many attempts, the acid wore into the wires under the battery, therefore causing more damage.

Summary.
Battery smokes
put in new battery
smokes a day later
battery smokes some more
wipers go crazy
wires starts burning
acceleration is horrible
throws code 70
Lets brainstorm.

Sounds like an alternator issue. Code 70 is Auto trans malfuntion, Is your D4 light blinking?

Sounds like the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad, causing overcharging of the system. Replace the alternator ASAP before it destroys your entire electrical system.

Bad batteries & bad alternators will cause a wide range of weird & extraordinary things to occur. I would definitely have the alternator checked out as both above recommended. However, have the battery checked took because it sounds like it got cooked pretty good. I'd still replace the battery anyway after it's fixed just for safety & piece of mind reasons.

I had this exact problem in a Jeep. Turned out, I was missing a lot of grounds for certain items and my car was relying heavy on the battery's negative. My lights and light switch went out, my wipers went on without notice, wires began to smoke behind the dash, all my gauges dropped and my battery began to leak acid.
