My 95 stock SI with ~160,000 miles recently started running rough (might be knocking) on light accels first thing in the morning. The problem goes away in about 4-5 minutes after the car is warmed up, but is very annoying/embarrassing. I live in So Cal. so mornings are not that cold. I recently replaced spark plugs (.042 inch gap), plug wires, rotor and distributor cap. I was hoping that it may be valve lash since that hasn't been adjusted in many years.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Are there any sensors (oxygen, knock,??) which may be causing this? What could be causing this?

what's your timing set at? Warm up the car and make sure it's 16 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees.

Does it sound like it's pinging, or a rod knock???

I haven't been able to check my timing. If my check engine light has not come on, I assume the engine is not reporting ECU codes, but I'm not sure. The car runs great, very smooth when warm. The cold start noise is not metallic in nature. No metal pings or hard knocks. I'm not sure if it is the same as knocking (might be). It just runs and sounds rough and lacks power like it is out of tune, bad fuel mixture, bad timing, something like that. I wish I could describe the noise better.
