Recommendations for 97 Del Sol VTEC
Hi everyone, I'm new to Hondas and also to this site. I recently purchased a 97 Del Sol with the b16a2 and since have been researching as much as I can to give it some TLC. I'd like down the line to increase the power because I feel it's a little low on torque and who wouldn't like to increase the potential of their car? From what I've read and if money wasn't an issue, I'd probably go with a k/24 k20 frank motor but I know that requires plenty work/parts/money. I bought the car with only 84k miles and is completely stock. So part of me feels it would be a waste to completely remove an engine and transmission that have plenty of life left, so I figure I might as well use as much as I can of what I already have. My main question is: what would be the most cost effective build I can go with that will help me achieve more power while still being reliable. It doesn't have to be rip your face off fast. I'd just like maybe 200 whp or around that. I'd like to keep it NA preferably and possibly still keep PS and AC (although I'm willing to remove both if it's worth it) From what I've read, I was thinking of a poor mans type r build. My reasoning was that I could get a gsr block and Use my b16a2 head and tranny. Would that work? Would that be worth it? Are there any other options that would yield better results meeting my criteria? I'm open to any recommendation or suggestion. Thanks!

Re: Recommendations for 97 Del Sol VTEC
Method 1.) B20VTEC - will help with torque, but honestly not a great deal of HP.
Method 2.) Induction kit (Turbo/Super)
Method 3b.) Build out the B16A2 with new pistons, cams, P&P, and a good tune
Method 3a.) 98+ spec ITR swap...
Method 4.) K-swap

All these are great but you want to keep the B Series so I would start with the internals as well. BUT the poor mans type R is definitely an excellent idea along with internals i think will give you that extra power you want to feel.

Sounds like you've already done a fair bit of research. OP said he wanted to stay away from the K-Swap and turbo for the time being.
My recommendation would definitely be to get a B20 or B18B block with an OEM 89mm crankshaft, and build the shortblock outside of the car with rods and some high compression Nippon/YCP pistons, then when you're ready pull out your current longblock and use your B16 head on the B20 block.
If you're not familiar with building engines, I'd highly recommend finding a shop willing to assemble everything for you. All in, this shouldn't be too expensive. You can re-use every part in your B16 head, the trans will bolt right up, etc.
