im sure this is nothing to worry about but this morning it was about 50 dergees and i started my car up to go to work and i got a loud tapping noise coming from the engine that lasted for about 30 seconds. (i have a d16z6 turbo btw..84,000 original miles) i let the car warm up and started driving and the noise went away and i drove 20 miles to work and it was fine. no smoke came from the exhaust or anything. but last night i started my car and moved it 2 feet so my nieghbor could park and i shut it off without letting it warm up and then i didnt drive it till this morning. does anybody know what could have caused this? is it time for new valves or valve seals?

Perhaps you should check your valve adjustment first.

i'll have it checked...but this is the first time it ever happened...even if i move the car 2 feet i usually let it get up to operating temp but last night i had food on the stove so i had to run out and run back in

How about trying to identify exactly WHERE the tapping is coming from? What does your oil pressure read?

i dont know what the oil pressure is i dont have a gauge for it...the oil light didnt come on though...i didnt have time to pop the hood and listen i was getting in the car at 6:30 am this morning to go to work...i dont have any aftermarket gauges in my car (even though i probably should)

Get a gauge. If the oil light comes on it's pretty much too damn late. I'm not saying you've spun a bearing but if you're running a boosted car, oil pressure should be just as important to you as air/fuel. Not having ANY gauges is, pardon me for saying, just plain friggin' stupid.

You can pull the oil pan just to make sure.

yeah i know i should have gauges but i jus havent had the time or the money...i wasn't planning on the civic bein my daily driver but the trans went in my truck so i didnt have a choice. its been my daily since may and i havent really had n e serious problems with it...despite the fact that its an ebay turbo

You can get Sunpro gauges for next to nothing. The Wideband and gauge is what's going to cost you. I suggest as long as you're driving that car you need to start monitoring what is happening with it.

As it is it might be to late.

Think about it this way, if this car suffers catastrophic failure, where does that leave you with the truck down? Can you really afford to NOT get those gauges?

the oil light is something NEVER to go by as they said its too late it only comes on when oil pressure is below 3psi and that's extremely low

UPDATE: drove the car home from work and it was fine...no tapping or noise what so ever....i went on glowshift.com they want $42 for boost gauge and $199 for wideband oil pressure was like 50 something

In my engines, I have had loud tapping noises on startup due to valves. The lash adjusters would deflate and give a tapping noise. I'm not sure if that could be a problem with the z6, but it was pretty common for that engine and the amount of wear it caused was minimal. However in the honda engines, I believe the lash adjust is manual, right?

Have you checked your oil level? How does it look? Are you sure it wasn't pinging? Are you running premium gas?

yeah i had glowshift gauges in my 04 em2 they were the ****...i used to have 3 of them set on bob marley colors hahaha....i checked the oil level its right where it should be and i get it changed every 2500 miles....and yes im runnin 91 octane thats what the car is tuned on.... i can run 91 octane or even 93 if i wanted to...i just think it had something to do with me turning it on last night to move it and shutting it off without letting it warm up or n e thing....the internals that are in there only have like 10,000 miles on them. they were changed when the turbo kit was put on

If one of your valves is more out of adjustment than the others and the oil had dripped down, you might notice the tapping only when that valve is in a certain position and has not received oil yet. Perhaps.
