Default 94 civic ex

So, when my car is cold, it doesn't sound like it wants to stay on, idles really terrible. When I am stopped at a light or stopping to turn the rpm surges from 1 to 1.5 or 2... over and over. After I drive for a while, or if it is extremely cold it will stall out if i stop and not want to go very fast at all, I've replace the Idle air control valve... My speedometer and odometer also do not work if that has anythign to do with it... I'm not very mechanically inclined so if you could help I'd greatly appreciate it...

Is the dash Check Engine Light (CEL) staying ON when you drive?

The fact that both the speedometer and odometer don't function suggests that the vehicle speed sensor atop the transmission may be bad. Also check whether fuse 24 under the dash is blown.

Regarding the idle problem, you may need to clean or replace the fast idle valve on the throttle body. Here's how to test its function:

I don't have the car right now, but there is a light that stays on the dash constantly, it's and s something s light... I can't remember if it is an SES light... which would be service engine soon right?

That's interesting because fuse 24 also protects the SRS system.

Yes. Check whether fuse 24 is blown.

Hmm, there apparently is a short somewhere in my electrical.. because My check engine light doesn't work... the lighter doesn't work, and all the other components on those fuses work... I don't know how to locate 24 either.

Check whether fuse 32 (BACKUP) is blown. Also, the previous owner may have disabled the CEL. Check whether the dash bulb was removed or whether the gauge assembly or ECU wires were cut.

Check whether fuse 23 is blown.

What do you guys think about bleeding the coolant? I see people do that on here alot... My problem doesn't seem to be near as bad as it was before I changed the IACV... seems to just do it when it wants to... Also, the guy I got the car from said the problem was some kind of cold sensor... but the only thing i could figure is he meant the engine coolant sensor... but that's not what he said so I'm not sure ....

Bleeding the cooling system is worth a try. A bad coolant temperature sensor is also a possibility, but fix the CEL circuit first because codes stored in the ECU could give important information.

I am going to change the fuses you gave me... and try that... I'm not sure anything about the wiring of the ECU and clusters, and how to change the bulb.

I already replaced the IACV .... seemed to get a little better... still not driving right... I'm going to take it today and probably get a diagnostic ran on it.

I'd check for any vaccuum leaks and double check your fitv...

you could also need the coolant system bled or more coolant in the engine.

I took it and had a diagnostic ran... It returned nothing... would the speed sensor return something if it was the fault of my speedometer not working? ...
