93 jhmeg8 crazy idle
As the weather got colder, my idle would act erratic as shown in this video until the engine warmed up. now that the weather is staying cold, my idle stays this way. it revs from 1k - 1.8k over and over unless I'm giving it gas..
I haven't driven it longer than 20-30 minutes recently to find out if it stops after a longer period of time.
Love this car, love the 5th gen EG 4door sedans period. I have lots of non-ricey long term plans for this car, I'm just not made of money =/
Bought the car with some subpar work done to it already and have steady been fixing what I can, but it is my daily driver.
I'm open to suggestions and will probably try everything I can this weekend

$300 new for OEM and my nearest honda dealer would have to order it. how long can i drive it this way before its causing irreparable harm? aftermarket was $155-200. im gonna take mine apart, clean it up see if anything is out of the ordinary

if that is the cause, then it shouldnt really harm anything... besides driving you crazy from hearing/trying to fight it. but always nice to get a second opinion

I read on another thread here on these forums someone had a similar problem, they took apart the IACV and cleaned it, said there was a screen that was gunked up. So I did the same, sadly it did not fix the problem

Does it go away when the engine warms up? That would mean its the FITV, a hundred bucks at autozone. Check it out, its under the throttle body yo.

it doesn't go away at all. i cleaned the AICV as much as I could. I'm hesitant to buy any part before settling all and any doubts. I made the mistake at throwing money at hard to diagnosis problems in the past. I don't have the liberty of doing that this time around, especially knowing the other things I want and need to do that aren't cosmetic in nature: upgrade brakes ( drums in back =[ ) replace struts ( previous owner lowered it by cutting springs, ruined the struts then put performance springs with a kit.. ) , then the rest of the gaskets I haven't got to yet.
funny story about throwing money at a problem...... this car wouldn't start when the temperature dropped below freezing. go ahead and do what any mechanic would think of... start your troubleshooting flowchart in your mind..

there was a tiny leak in my windshield, the water leaked down, got inside my main relay and filled my main relay with water. when the temperature was freezing, the water inside the relay froze. it would crank and crank but never fire...

^^^ Yes tap the IACV when it's acting up to see if you notice a change. If so then it's the IACV. I had this problem once with my turbo d16y7 once and it was from a slight HG leaking exhaust into my cooling system. I had to make sure the my cooling system was bled properly because if your IACV has coolant fed to it and it catches air pockets your symptoms may occur.
Sorry for the unneeded info. I watched the link to Eric's video after the post.

Hmm, what about FITV (the thing Eric uses a screwdriver on in the vid)? Or a vacuum leak? THere's a way to test this too... I think Eric has another vid for it.
Note FITV might need a full clean ... not just messing with it with a screwdriver. DIYs for this are on HT. Check the FAQs.

Re: 93 jhmeg8 crazy idle
Replaced iacv, bled cooling system as described in the video ( link above) , idle hasnt changed a bit. Fml. Held rpms steady, noticed radiator fan never came on and the temp never passed halfway. I replaced radiator and coolant temp sender earlier this year. Hooked fan straigjt to batter and it came on. Beating my head against a brick wall

If your radiator fan never came on, and your temperature never went up, it sounds like your thermostat might be stuck open.
You still haven't addressed everyone telling you to remove and fully clean your FITV.

The idle problem doesnt go away when the car reaches normal temp. Someone suggested it would be the FITV if it was only idling crazy while warming up. Something telling the ecu then iacv is beat up. Gonna have to beat it another week =/
Oh that FITV is special order only btw.
