Default 93 Del Sol - Spark Plug broke off in engine

To get things started i own a '93 civic del sol s 1.5l engine no mods that i know of as i am the 4th owner of the car and the last owner did do much to the car except change the radio out.

So I am new to car ownership and purchased one of my dream cars as a first car and was very happy with it. However the car was neglected and routine maintenance had not been done in sometime. So i went about doing some of it starting with spark plugs. Well 2 came out like butter on silk and no problems were had 3rd one is pretty well seized in there. The 4th plug is the big issue now. As I was turning it (it was kinda sticky) I worked the plug back and forth to loosen it using penetrating oil to hasten the process. As i turned it it seemed to be getting loose enough to go ahead and attempt to remove so with as little force as i could i turn (counter clock wise) and it seemed to be free however i noticed it made a click when i turned it and began to remove it only to find that the click was the sound of the threading separating from the nut and out cam everything but the outer contact and threading leaving me with what looked like a sparkplug without threads. What should i do now? i have called most of the shops many wont work on my car and the rest say its a 1000+ job and theyll have to drill out my engine head. no mechanic has actually looked at the car and but they are all trying to assure me this requires drilling the head.

I don;t know how to add photos if anyone can tell me i will have photos posted later today.

No way. The remaining base of the plug can be drilled out and removed with an extractor. Keep calling around.

Just curious, why won't they work on your car? Did they give you a reason.

how would they drill into it there is nothing remaining of the bas except the threading none of the porcelain is there it all came up with the rest. Not sure really no one has told me why but 3 outa 5 won't touch the thing I have a tie rod seized on and they wont even touch that.

If i can post pics this would be easier lol.

Yeah the metal part of the plug is still in there. You need one very large easy out and you may be able to get it out without any drilling.

After you get it out, I would still retap the threads just to renew them. Then the biggest issue is how to vacuum out the cylinder to get any metal and porcelain debris out of there without having to remove the head.

You might be stuck pulling the head off. Not really sure.

Any good DIYs on how to remove the cylinder head from a del sol I can't get passed removing the timing belt.

pictures or videos would be the most helpful.

Even better: Buy/borrow/download the factory service manual for your car. It will have a full and comprehensive write-up on how to disassemble and reassemble a motor.

Yeah honestly, for a grand, they could remove the freakin cylinder head and extract it from the combustion chamber side. That should not cost a grand to do.

A used non-VTEC d-series cylinder head will go for under 100$, and for under 500$ for a whole freakin powerplant.

Whoah time out. For a grand, you could do a complete rebuild on the ENTIRE motor, and put a couple of stronger components in there for future power.

Anyone know a good place in st.louis to take a older honda. I have 246k original (from what im told) miles want to do a rebuild or at least a tune up of the engine.

This car has a stock vtec motor in it which is rare for the model so i want to preserve it in case I ever sell it.

I believe that would be the D16Z6.... You don't have to perserve that one and can pick up another D16Z6 from another 92-95 civic and it will be a perfect match.

The motors of this era didn't have the VIN stamped on them so there is really no way to identify if the motor is a swap if it's the same motor that was in it.

Should be able to isolate a D16Z6 motor for around 500 in decent shape. And if you want, keep your old Z6 and rebuild it for back up.

Time out, OP says it's a Del Sol S, which comes with a D15B7, then says it has a stock VTEC motor, which the D15B7 isn't.

OP, if you have a VTEC motor in your car, it isn't stock. If you have the stock motor in your car, it isn't VTEC, and it certainly isn't rare either way.

So if my motor isn't the stock motor that i was informed it was how can I know the miles in it for sure? And from what I can tell the mechanic is trying to get me to buy a motor through him and that's it cause none of the issues in the oil existed before he touched my car. And a 93 del sol s sold less than 10000 in the US total sales so to me its a rare car. Not to say it's not a cheap car.

First off, check the engine stamp. It'll be on the front of the motor, about halfway down the block, near the transmission, and will either be D15B7, or D16Z6. Let's figure out exactly which engine you have, and be 100% sure about it.

Second off, if it isn't the original motor, you only have one way of knowing how many miles are on the engine, and even that is a longshot. You would have to contact the previous owner of the car, and ask him/her. If they did the swap, they might know how many miles are on the engine. Good chances are, though, that they either don't know, don't remember, or just don't care.

Went and got a history on the car from car fax the car was rebuilt in the early 2000s the millage is somewhere under 150k good driving history well maintained after that so i see no reason for this "sudden" head gasket issue. The car doesn't over heat at all that i have ever seen it just suddenly had the mixxed fluids....and the shop is hell bent on selling me on another engine swap.
