Default 92 Civic - What is worst case scenario for the speedometer not working?

I am looking into purchasing a '92 EG hatch and the seller says there is no problem except for the speedometer that goes on and off. He says it's probably a faulty VSS. If it's not the VSS, what's the worst possible thing it could be cost wise? Car has a clean title and rust free so I think I'd really like to pull the trigger on it.

Thanks

Then have him swap it out if it's just the VSS. Should take all of 5 minutes.

^ This. Then you'll know if it's "just the VSS".

Worst case the VSS and the speedometer head are both bad.

'92 - '95 civics in my expierence suffer from bad speedometer heads a lot more often than bad VSSes. You can usually fix the speedometer head by touching the solder points on the back with a soldering iron though.

This^

The problem additionally could be caused by a bad wire or bad VSS plug, which also seems to be common.

Is CEL code 17 thrown?

Sorry for older thread bump...
My speedo started going crazy only at wot, then crazy during normal driving, finally quit working all together and would very occasionally have a speed spike. Now it currently always shows 0 mph, and cel (code 17) pops up after 5-10min of driving. Since the cel I have tried 2 different speed sensors, and got a different connector plug. Still no workie. I used a multimeter and measured volts at the plug...it has 12 volts on the hot wire. I have spun the wheel with car in the air in the gear inside the trans moves.
The only thing I have yet done is use a multimeter on the cluster while a wheel is moving.
My question is, If the speedo has no volts going to it or is bad, would I still get the cel code 17?
If anyone has any experience or has helpful insight please lemme know. Thanks.
