how much for a new head gasket...and how difficult to put in?

bout 40 bucks. get a helms manuel to help with the sequences.

something cheap and realiable...the guy tells me (i havent purchased it yet, just doing research) that it needs replacing, and driving it would hurt the engine. the engine has 200k on it and i just need something that will last before i gather the money to swap (which could be 6months to a year)

Change the headgasket, do a tune up (oil, plugs, wires, etc.) and you should be able to keep it together for that long if you don't beat on it everyday.
