6th generation Civic automatic trans shift points / speeds
I have a 97 Civic EX D16Y8 with a 4sp automatic trans. From a standing start on level pavment at moderate excelleration it shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 20 mph. Because the car is not getting very good milage even though it runs very well I suspect the trans- linear solenoid is sticking or something similar. My Helms manual only shows shifting point specs in voltages. I may go to some used car lots and try similar cars to compare but I was hoping someone could tell me if this 20mph shift point is about right for an automatic......?

What do you mean by moderate Acceleration? 1/4 throttle? 1/2 throttle? If you give me an idea I will go check for you.

These are the about the speeds when it shifted from 1st to 2nd.
3,000 RPM ~15mph
3,250 RPM ~18mph
3,500 RPM ~20mph
I hope this helps.

Re: 6th generation Civic automatic trans shift points / speeds
8yrold thread I know but it has a good title and I came from Google.
Note: Numbers are for a d16y7 with a 4-speed automatic, 1999 civic DX, which is a d16y8 minus VTEC.
with very very light throttle;
1st to 2nd is ~5MPH
2nd to third: ~22MPH
third to fourth:~30MPH
4th to 4th soft lock-up range: generally engages at ~40MPH
4th hard lockup: ~52MPH.
3rd gear hard lock-up (if you have the selector in [3]): ~66MPH, maybe a bit more.
full throttle:
1st to 2nd is: ~36MPH
2nd to third: ~62MPH, a bit more if you put the gear selector is [2], then it goes to rev limit I believe
3rd to 4th: Good luck, try a decent down slope. Transmission is the limiting point in top speed due to torque converter inefficiency in 3rd. Top speed, flat surface, is right at 100MPH, maybe 95MPH if you have a head wind.
@OP, if it's staying in 1st until 20MPH with light throttle then there is something wrong.
