1998 Civic 5 speed - what fluid to use in tranny?
Searched and for every term it said none found.
I have a 1998 Honda Civic DX with 138k miles. Don't know if the tranny lube has ever been changed. I would like to. Manual states I can use 10W-30 temporarily but prefers using Honda MTL.
I would like to use something synthetic...what do y'all recommend?
Also, how much does it take?
Any tips or tricks?
Thanks

Honda MTF is not re-labeled 10W-30 motor oil.
To the original poster, pick up three quarts of Honda MTF at your local Honda or Acura dealer.

In the link, it says something about d/c the vss. Can I just use the fill plug hole for adding the new fluid?

My tranny had a 3rd gear grind, put GM syncro mesh fricion modified in. No 3rd gear grind 3 years later.
Just fill it till it starts to seep out of the fill plug hole.

No, the old isn't either. Plus, as others have mentioned, transmission fluid changes are not very frequent and do not require a lot of fluid, so you aren't saving very much at all by going with regular motor oil. If you use motor oil, that's your choice, but it shouldn't be recommended to others when better options are available.
