I am going to describe this the best possible, I would post a pic but havent had time to take one yet. But the latch part that bolts onto the door, the metal behind it is rusted and stating to rust apart. Has anyone else had this problem, maybe what caused it(because I have never seen a car rust there) and what is the best way to fix it to get proper alignment after?

My 95 has the same problem and from what I have read it is a common problem on the Sols. The fix that I am going to do and have read many have done, buzz the rust to bare metal weld up the spots then sand smooth, primer and paint.

Yes that's a common problem on del sols.
I had that repaired for me by a welding shop.
Be aware that on the driver's side of the car the gas filler pipe is not to far behind this spot of the door jam. The welder was pretty observant of this before he started the job and pointed it out to me. The smart thing is to take out the interior panel and radio speaker behind this door jam and stuff a welding blanket in there. An experienced welder used small welds and spliced in a piece of fresh mateal and then ground it smooth. I think I paid $110.

Yep i have seen it in a lot of sols. I have heard its because of train tubes they have, or somthing a long those lines
