How many miles does she have? I'd doubt that they need changing yet, I've never had to do a drum before 100K, and I've had a few cars that I've never touched them on.

hopefully it's as you said where it won't need replacing.. so then i guess i'd like to know how to at least inspect them..

How detailed of a project would it be to change the rear drums to discs?

about average.. it wasn't that difficult.. i swapped my 97 hatch rear drums to disc..

but the 02 ex isn't mine, nor is it to be used for performance by the owner so it's just a maintenance item..

Just use it while coasting to see if it slows the car down. If it does, they're probably fine. The cable may need adjusting though, becuase they stretch. If they were worn, you'd hear squealing, it's the 'wear indicator' for the drums.
