~~~My Timming Jumped~~~
Ok yesterday, I was changing my distributor when i got home.... I put the new one on and I dont think It was seated correctly in the camshaft when I put it in... Well I tried to start the car and just turned over and heard a little bit of compression out of the exhaust, but no start up...
So I switch the distributor back thinking that the dizzy was bad, when i pulled out the new on it had marks fromt he cam shafts where it had dug intot he ears on the dizzy, like it didnt seat correctly in the end of the camshaft, or something like that... I switched them back and forth, and still the same thing...
I then checked both dizzy's and they were getting spark on all cylinders, getting fuel, so the next thing was timming. I checked the timming belt and it was still intact (not broken). So I pulled the cover off, checked the marks... I line the exhaust Camshaft to there the word up was set at 12 oclock well the word up on the intake shaft was at about 3 or 4 oclock, so that told me my timming was off...
Well My questions are this
1. Did my timming jump due to the dizzy being jammed or not seated correctly?
2. shouold I just re set the timming and slide the belt back on?
3. should I just pull everything off and put a new timming belt on?
The reason I am asking about the belt is becuase I have never done one before, so I really dont want to do it... also anyone have a link as to how to set the cams back? Or do I jsut make sure both gears say up at the 12 oclock position and they are set?
I am killing myself here... Thanks for the help in advance...
Chuck
if you suspect at all that the belt might have slipped, i'd just rip it off and replace it before you run into a more serious problem(if you haven't already. Which engine are we talking about?
b16a2 in a 97 coupe......
As far as why it happened??
I dont think I had the dizzy, all the way flush in it, becuase of the scaring badly on the part of the dizzy that slides into the end of the camshaft... And then when I go to start it it wouldnt start... I checked it and it was way off, when 10 minutes before that I had just pulled in and havent had a problem witht he car in the alst year...
Re: (infrontofu)
do you think it's possible you had the dizzy off 180 degrees when you put it in? The ears won't slide in the camshaft when you do that, but they might have been just barely catching.
Re: (coquitlamEG)
that is exactly what I think happened... but when I pulled the valve cover off, I seent hat the marks werent lining up so that either told me that it slipped then or it has been slipping, so i need to replace it anyways... I think that is where the mscars came from on the prongs of the dizzy that stick in the camshaft....
